The face of someone who’s been taking high-quality treats and using his snoot to try to bury them in his bedding until he wears a raw spot on his sniffer and bleeds all over those IKEA fleece things, leaving scenes on our couch that resemble a wolf loose among the flock or remains of a pagan ritual.

Hey Baltimore, the Charles is screening Frederick Wiseman’s Boxing Gym this Saturday at 11:30 am and Monday at 7 pm, and you should go. It’s my favorite of his many films, and I all but guarantee you won’t have another shot at seeing it projected down the street before the sun goes out.

This isn’t “playing.” This is stepping off the front porch, landing in snow up to your belly, and questioning the life choices that led you to this moment.
A buff-colored mutt with lowered ears and a dark red jacket stands forlornly in belly-deep snow. His owner holds his leash but is not visible.

Hey, Baltimore, the Charles Theatre Revival Series is screening Akira Kurosawa’s Throne of Blood this Saturday at 11:30 am and next Monday at 7 pm. It is perhaps the greatest Shakespeare film adaptation ever made, edging the director’s own Ran with its vigor and shot-after-shot visual dazzle.

D. Boon died 40 years ago today. I still think about him all the time, in part because of some graffiti I came across in the men’s room at Big Ed’s Pizza in Oak Ridge, TN, several years back.
A dingy bathroom wall sporting the neatly written words, “What would D. Boon do?”

OK, my fellow Appalachian-Americans: Is mac and cheese part of our cuisine? I don’t believe I ever had it until a sleepover (with a family Not From Around Here) when I was a teen, and I certainly don’t remember it being a staple on holiday tables in East Tennessee. Not gatekeeping, just curious.
