Another wonderful research spotlight has been uploaded to our website, this time by our own Bairavi Selvarajah, asking ‘How do people with dyslexia perceive prosody?’ Here is a preview of Bairavi’s work. If you’d like to read more, head to our website
RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT
written by...
Bairavi SelvarajahHOW DO PEOPLE WITH DYSLEXIA PERCEIVE PROSODY?
Exploring the relationship between prosodic perception and musicality in developmental dyslexia.
PhD in Psychological Sciences
WHAT DO YOU STUDY?
My research explores developmental dyslexia in university students, with a particular focus on prosodic perception which is how people hear and interpret auditory cues in speech, such as changes in pitch or the natural stress we place on certain syllables or words. I'm also interested in investigating how these abilities might relate to other listening skills, such as musical perception.
WHY DO YOU THINK THIS WORK IS IMPORTANT?
It addresses a niche area where there are still limited research and inconsistent findings about the interaction between prosodic and musical perception in the context of dyslexia. By examining these two cognitive systems, one rooted in language processing and the other in music processing, we can start to build a clearer picture of how individuals with dyslexia perceive and process sound, and whether this is linked to their reading challenges.

A very exciting new research spotlight has been uploaded to our website!! Written by @eldoespsyc.bsky.social the post explores how social perceptions shape who gets an endometriosis diagnosis. You can get a taste of Ellen’s research here leedspostgraduatereview.wordpress.com/ellen-frost-...
HOW SOCIAL PERCEPTIONS SHAPE WHO GETS AN ENDOMETRIOSIS DIAGNOSIS
Centring LGBTQ+ experiences of endometriosis: A critical mixed-methods analysisWhat is endometriosis?
Imagine you are in chronic pain. You’ve been waiting around eight years for a diagnosis. Then, after years of your symptoms being normalised and not being believed by family, friends, colleagues, and healthcare professionals you finally receive a diagnosis, only to find the cause is unknown and there is no cure. That’s the reality for people with endometriosis. What do you research?
My PhD is about trying to improve the understanding of factors that contribute to this delay in diagnosis, specifically for LGBTQ+ patients, using a mixture of both quantitative and qualitative research methods.
My work aims to broaden who is involved in creating knowledge about the experiences of endometriosis diagnosis.VISIT OUR WEBSITE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT ELLEN’S RESEARCH!

I wrote an essay for @leedspgreview.bsky.social! In it I argue that the endometriosis diagnostic delay is not solely a clinical issue but a product of gendered norms around pain, fertility, and who is considered as a 'normative' patient. leedspostgraduatereview.wordpress.com/ellen-frost-...

Our latest research spotlight has arrived, and it’s written by our very own Mian Feng! To learn more about Mian’s research, check out our website: leedspostgraduatereview.wordpress.com
Research Spotlight written by Mian Feng. leedspostgraduatereview.wordpress.com @leedspostgraduatereviewWhat do you research?

My research looks at how Chinese learners of English understand regional UK accents, with a particular focus on West Yorkshire English.

I am especially interested in how unfamiliar accent features affect speech intelligibility and word recognition, and why some accents remain difficult to understand even after months of exposure. What approach do you take in your research?

I use controlled listening experiments to investigate how Chinese English Foreign Language (EFL) listeners perceive and recognise words spoken in West Yorkshire English.

By focusing on naturally occurring accent features, the study aims to capture the kinds of listening challenges learners face in real academic and social settings, rather than idealised or standardised speech.Visit our website to learn more about Mian’s research. leedspostgraduatereview.wordpress.com
