Recovery in logged forests may be much slower than previously assumed! Despite common expectations that logged tropical forests absorb large amounts of carbon as trees regrow, new research led by @amybenno.bsky.social suggests this may not be the case for some. leaf.leeds.ac.uk/news/no-carb... 🌏🧪

This #NationalTreeWeek we're celebrating all the research and practical conservation and restoration work that's done across our group. For example, a massive thankyou to our regular Friends of #GairWood group for their hard work planting a new hedge at our research woodland over the weekend!

Increasing woodland cover to 19% to help reach net-zero could change the biogenic emissions from UK woodlands. @treeswithhazel.bsky.social’s latest research shows the potential scale of change by 2050 associated with different tree species mixes. Find out more here: leaf.leeds.ac.uk/news/why-pla...
A graph of percentage change in BVOC emissions following afforestation, relative to present day land cover. The X axis shows percentage change in isoprene and the Y axis shows percentage change in total monoterpene. Five Afforestation experiments are plotted, as well as the present day UK tree species mix which is shown at 0 by 0 in the bottom left of the graph. Further key details are explored in the main text of this article.

We might not have made it to #BES2024 this year but we've been out in the field, working hard to maintain our research woodland and create new data on woodland creation in the UK

Researchers have been able to extract quantitative data on tree distributions from historical maps for the first time in Leeds and Edinburgh. Click through for a summary! leaf.leeds.ac.uk/news/new-dat...
Two old maps of hanover square side-by-side. They vary in levels of detail and style of symbols used to represent trees. Each side of the square is approximately 100m. The image on the right shows buildings in red.

Last year we planted #GairWood, a >60,000 tree research woodland in the north of England. Lots of our team and collaborators are now studying it as it grows! For more info and videos exploring the site and some key research, check out leaf.leeds.ac.uk/gairwood/
