Once the game was over they'd be rushing into town and heading straight for Leeds station and counting out the goals they'd seen and looking along the platforms.
Their romantic idea was to add up the final score, go to whichever platform that number gave them, and get on the next train.
At the other end of the line, at that random train's final destination, they would find a hotel and have their honeymoon.
It could be Barnsley or Bournemouth, said the Daily Express, or nowhere at all: in the event of a goalless draw, they were just going to camp where they were.
"We're prepared to go anywhere, even Land's End," Jim told the Yorkshire Post.
"All I hope is that at least one goal is scored," said Gillian.A photo of James and Gillian after the match, at Leeds City Station, looking up their train on the departure board

A photo of Jim and Gillian on their wedding day, Gill in full bridal gown about to kick a football"He won't admit that Leeds are the best team," Gillian Towle said of her fiancé James Cleary, especially not on this day.
Jim was a Crystal Palace fan, who lived a few minutes walk from Selhurst Park, in a street called Selhurst Place, and aged nineteen had a trial for his beloved club.
Gillian had moved from her home in Cookridge Avenue to be near him, testing her love of Leeds United against her newer love for Jim.
They'd met, the previous summer, while they were both on holiday in Majorca.
Gill had moved to London for love, and now they were back in Leeds for the love of football - and to be married.

It's Frank Worthington in the car park by the old training groud at Leeds, in full 1982 RFW pinstripes kit, his mullet, tash and five o'clock shadow all resplendent, leaning with one fist on the bonnet of a sporty looking Ford that's parked a very jaunty angle. I like to think he used to drive it around in full kit

Meanwhile, and I mean, obviously,
It's Jesse Marsch. He's in training kit — shorts and a trackie top. He's crouching weirdly with his fists clenched in front of him as if he's playing an invisible arcade machineSame guy, same pose, only now he's screaming and I hate it

Deffo Wilko. Phil Hay interviewed him about it: www.nytimes.com/athletic/208... But — they reckoned it was based on an Italy badge he'd seen at Euro '96. Wilko was already wearing it on #LUFC squad photo in summer 1995! (I found the Italy badge I think he copied, seen on a blazer here in 1993)
Found on eBay, a signed Leeds United squad poster from 1995/96, with Wilko on the front row in a blazer bearing his new design shieldRoberto Baggio, with some Italian officials, one of whom is wearing a shield on his blazer that could have been Wilko's inspiration (that, and a bottle of wine, according to Phil Hay's article)

From the EFL's written reasons on Spygate II — also noting elsewhere that the intern we've all seen had refused, under pressure, to spy on Ipswich: Middlesbrough now have the chance to do the funniest thing — and the rightest thing — by offering that intern a job with them for next season
In addition to the sporting sanctions a reprimand is considered appropriate in the present case because of the way in which junior members of staff were put under pressure to carry out activities which they felt were, at the least, morally wrong. Such staff were in a vulnerable position without job security and with limited ability to object to, or resist the instructions given to them.

Ah, Glen Baxter, well done on everything, it was great.
A Glen Baxter cartoon, drawn in colour in his inimitable 1930s Boy's Own comic style — the headline says 'Overcoming problems' and the caption says 'Beware men with suggestive tattoos' — the drawing is of a woman in a greed dress, clutching a bag, standing against a starscape and being confronted by a man wearing one green gloves and y-fronts, with a large tattoo across his chest: 'LEEDS UTD'The Glen Baxter classic. Two bobbies standing around a cloud at their feet, one peering at it around a shed wall, another disappearing into the sky, only his boots still visible. The caption reads: 'Police investigate an outbreak of surrealism in Leeds'

A Leeds Council report on the future Elland Road masterplan is out, ahead of Exec Board meeting next week 1,500 apartments 25,000 m² of commercial floorspace A 175-bed hotel* (*Bates, twitches) Lots of detail to go through but we just want the sexy indicative graphics really don't we #LUFC
A drawing of what the land behing the future Elland Road West Stand could — repeat, could, this is all 'indicative' look like. Across a tree-lined avenue from the stand, the car parks are under a lot of large buildings, with the ones in the background near the motorway being towers rising from 12 to 25 floorsThis is an indicative map of what the land around the stadium could look like. It shows the buildings from the first image, behind the West Stand, arranged in blocks around some open space made to look like a twee little football pitch. Those blocks are all within the existing Bobby Collins Way with building heights from 8 to 12 storeys; around its edge, near the railway line and motorway, are eight towers with smaller footprints, and heights from 6 to 25 floors. All these buildings are marked as mixed use residential.

Behind the East Stand, on the car park and bus park, are leisure, commercial and education blocks, from 3 to 5 storeys. Nearest Elland Road, on the corner with Lowfields Road, is a 9-storey hotel. On the car park opposite that — next to McDonalds — is an 8 storey multi-storey car park. There are some residential buildings and new 'flexible public realm' between Wesley Street and the Peacock. This drawing shows two sections through the site, showing the building heights compared to the (expanded) stadium

I wrote this about Barry Bannan being at #LUFC, in case anybody out there is racking their brains for the details Best bit was proving his Twitter account was really his. In 2011 people hadn't learned not to hold up easily editable pieces of paper! www.leedsista.com/barry-bannan...
A dimly lit photo of Barry Bannan that he posted to his Twitter account when he had all his own hair. In the original, he was holding up a piece of paper with his username on.
