Sept 11th, 2001 was a big reason I decided to join the military as a doctor. I wanted to do more for my country, be a part of something bigger than me. 25 years later I have completed 11 years of service, won awards for teaching, and been banned twice for being trans in the military.
A picture of the Original Poster. They are a white masculine person with short brown hair and circular glasses. They are pointing up to two faculty teaching awards. They are also wearing a t-shirt form HRC which says “Proud Veteran”.

5 years today since graduating residency at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. To graduate from a military residency is something I never thought would no longer be possible for trans people. A snapshot of history past and present.
A screenshot of a formal portrait of a white androgynous person with black rimmed glasses smiling at the camera. They are wearing a military uniform. The text next to their photo says, “Riordan Ledgerwood CPT, MC, USA” and below that the logo for Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

They are wearing a t-shirt with the words in rainbow text, “Care Had No Labels”. They are wearing a t-shirt with the text, “Twice Banned Yet Still I Stand”. “Them: Why are you so open about being trans?”

Me: Maybe the more people who ‘know’ a trans person, the more people will care about what’s happening to us.”

This year, I am out and open for all who can't due to the risk of losing jobs, housing, friends and families, and their lives. I will continue to work to make this state, this country, this world a better and safer place for trans people. I will be a voice. I will be me.
A picture of the poster. They are a white masculine looking person with short brown hair and a beard on their chin. They are wearing circular rimmed glasses and have a stethoscope around their neck. They are holding up a trans flag. In the background is a whiteboard with the words “Happy Trans Awareness Day!!!” There is also what looks like ivy bordering the whiteboard which is different and the poster cannot really explain why it’s there. It just is.

A screenshot of the text:

“Let me offer some straight talk:

Pediatricians strive to do all they can to ensure kids do not die.

The fewer childhood vaccines RFK Jr. is recommending means more children will be much more likely to die.

If you cannot trust the people who actively save the lives of children on a daily basis, how is it you trust a person without a medical degree who does not care if your child dies or not?

Pediatricians have seen that pain and suffering first hand.
RFK Jr. has not.

Who do you trust your kids’ lives to?”

There is also a picture of a white masculine looking person with a patchy bear, using a stethoscope to listen to a stuffed lion. Their shirt says "Proud Veteran".The back of a Holiday Card. The heading is "Another Year...". The text is "2025 has been an incredibly life changing year for me.
I got banned a second time for being trans in the military,
legally changed my name, had a chapter in a book of trans military members, left the Army, and started a fellowship in
pediatric endocrinology back home in Louisville, KY.
I also fulfilled a dream and adopted a dog,
a monster named BeAR and got my fourth tattoo.
This past month has been challenging with my Dad in and out of the hospital, and a car accident this past week, showing me the ups and downs of life. However, as I think about next year, I have the hope and foundations for a bright 2026,
and a velcro dog who is always demanding of pets.

Wishing you all warmth, kindness, and Care,
Riordan."

In Residency on night shifts sometimes I would stand in the quiet of “The President’s Hospital”, reflecting on the U.S. Army values. I joined the Army because I believed in those values and I still do. I left the Army, in part, because I saw leaders who could not uphold those values.

Now on the annual medical survey. This pic will be a sign in the future of the awful discrimination of trans people in the military. Tell the truth and get kicked out for being yourself. Lie and get saddled with guilt and fear for being found out, simply because you wish to continue your service.
A screenshot of the screen of a laptop. The screen shows a question from the annual military medical survey. It says, “Are you currently being evaluated for, have a current diagnosis of, or exhibit symptoms consistent with gender dysphoria?” Then below it offers the options of “Yes” and “No”. In the corner it has the date of July 16th, 2025.
