Shinji Kimura's great "Talkie Building," one of our first fully realized BG. Though the same building appears in the movie, the painting was never actually used as a BG. Hand-painted, of course — Nicker Poster Colors on art paper.

Hand-painted BG depicting a down angle of a retro skyscraper topped with elaborate signage.

Shinji painted this very early on, one of his first fully realized BG paintings. The painting was never used, though the same building appears early in the film.

Shinji Kimura concept art, eventually recycled as BG (with many additional paintings to fill gaps revealed by the camera move). So many great details in this one painting... Nicker Poster Colors on art paper. They don't make 'em like this any more!

Tekkonkinkreet concept art by Shinji Kimura, depicting a worm's-eye-view of a colorful storefront in a multi-cultural metropolis.

I almost don't draw personal stuffs recently, but for a change I did a human version of Isabelle the fox hehe

From TEKKONKINKREET scene 1 cut 6, spectacular layout and hand-painted BG elements. The plan for executing this (including the 180° roll) is all from the great Shinji Kimura.
