LinkedIn suggested a post, talking about a paper that did interest me, but I made the mistake of going through the comments. Like I fell deep in r/LinkedInLunatics

RightsCon is officially cancelled. Devastating for all the colleagues already making their way to Zambia. The government cannot come out unscathed from this.

The Government of Zambia unilaterally decides to "postpone" RightsCon 2026, less than a week before the conference starts in Lusaka. This is an international embarrassment for Zambia and an affront to civil society.

If it wasn't enough for Disney to milk Marvel, Star Wars and other franchises dry with bland shows on D+, now they're eagerly welcoming AI slop. openai.com/index/disney...

Apple now directly encouraging students to use "AI chatbots" and promoting all the usual suspects. Hardly surprising (30% cut on in-app subscriptions...), but remember this when they try to pass as a human creativity-first brand.

The image depicts a scene from the Harry Potter film turned into a meme, where Professor McGonagall asks Hermione, Ron, and Harry: "Why is it, when something happens, it is always you three?". Instead of the three famous characters, the meme reads "Sequoia Capital", "A16Z", and "CapitalG", three Venture Capital firms.

Middle managers and CEOs freaking out right now, as their favorite Sycophantic Text Extruding Machines can't regurgitate their geniusness.

The primary website people use to check if a website is down is also affected by the #Cloudflare outage. 😅 It would be quite funny, if it wasn't a reminder of everything we take for granted when building our digital experiences.

Talking about the frail infrastructure of the web. Nothing showcases the issues with concentration and dependency like a good old outage. #Cloudflare

If you ever needed a reason to stop using Instagram, forced “ad breaks” are it.

To me this is the proper official #MozFest closure/wrap-up panel.

Today I’m attending the 4D Conference in Barcelona—feels nice to join a digital rights event without taking a flight for a change. This morning starts strong with @rashaar.bsky.social presenting on the state of affairs of EU regulation and the road ahead to hold Big Tech accountable.

And of course there are never clear definitions or boundaries tied to the concept. His answers to investors during the recent earnings call are even worse. "building something that is fundamentally smarter than people" 😶‍🌫️

Is it me or does this come off as pretty mafia like? You either buy into my vision for this tech or you'll end up being an outcast. I guess you can imagine which CEO said this in their recent earnings call last week.
Screenshot of Mark Zuckerberg's answer to a question in Meta's Q2 2025 earnings call that says: "I mean I personally think that -- I wear contact lenses, I feel like if I didn’t have my vision corrected, I’d be sort of at a cognitive disadvantage going through the world. And I think in the future, if you don’t have glasses that have AI or some way to interact with AI, I think you’re kind of similarly probably be at a pretty significant cognitive disadvantage compared to other people who you’re working with, or competing against"

Genuinely neat and useful feature, but I'm begging reporters to add *at least* some nuance. Text recognition (OCR) has been around for years. Perhaps we can tone down a bit tech companies' ✨ magical innovation ✨ PR.

Twitter used to be at the top of the ranking in 2020 and 2022. But post-Musk's acquisition the company has fallen off a cliff on several transparency areas. X didn't even publish transparency reports for more than two years. Just take a look at the score changes since 2022:

We're also able to compare public vs private companies, due to the assessment of TikTok and X (formerly Twitter). There are serious concerns about governance shortcomings.
Graph showing "How do privately held companies compare to their peers on governance?". With ByteDance and X in the lower end of the results.

Chinese companies had the greatest improvements (although starting from quite a lower baseline) and there are some promising developments. It's the first time we see clear human rights commitments from Alibaba and Tencent (!). Also a sneak peak of the "fall from grace" from a certain platform...

It's not that nobody noticed, it's that hardly anyone watched it. 42k views on YouTube since it was published two months ago... It's also not particularly fun or interesting to capture attention, much like any other AI slop. I guess Apple had already called dibs on Spike Jonze.

Today's my favourite festivity in Catalunya, Sant Jordi, their unique take to celebrate World Book Day. People stroll around the city looking for the perfect book and rose to gift their loved ones 🌹🐉

Brilliant quote from my colleague Sam, for this report by Friends of the Earth. policy.friendsoftheearth.uk/reports/harn...
Quote from Samantha Ndiwalana, Ranking Digital Rights Research Lead, World Benchmarking Alliance, stating: "Companies like to say that AI is going to change the world. They say creating AI might do a bit of environmental damage now, but AI is also going to come up with the tools to solve that environmental damage, and it will all be worth it in the end. This is a moment for us to push back on that and question whether AI is ever going to have the capabilities in any form to be able to create this utopia. Whether we're willing to take that environmental risk, the damage that it's doing now in exchange for a utopia later. I personally don't think that we should."

I've lost track of the amount of times during this past decade that I wanted to hit my head against the wall because of how inane the tech industry actually is.
The image is screenshot of an article written by Ed Zitron, titled Deep Impact. The text shown on the screenshot says:

"The entire AI bubble was inflated based on the premise that these models were simply impossible to build without burning massive amounts of cash, straining the power grid, and blowing past emissions goals, and that these were necessary costs to create "powerful AI."

Obviously, that wasn’t true. Now the markets are asking a very reasonable question: “did we just waste $200 billion?”"

When visiting Washington D.C. earlier this month, the hotel I stayed at had one of the coolest amenities I've seen: a bedside reading program. 📚 Besides ebooks, they leave a physical copy that you can keep! Now, I try not to judge a book by its cover...
The picture shows the cover of the book "Artificial Intelligence, Hope, and the Human Spirit", written by Henry A. Kissinger, Craig Mundie, and Eric Schmidt.

Looking forward to diving into this new Citizen Lab report on Amazon's content restrictions and censorship practices. Amazon is one of the least transparent Big Tech companies on freedom of expression and access to information standards in the Ranking Digital Rights Index.
