A break from #cropmap26 data preparation. Today’s our annual welcome back BBQ. It’s a chance for everyone to chat and tell stories of their summer adventures.

As a Canadian, I assume they are converting it to 5-pin bowling lanes.
Snap shot of a red 5-pin bowling ball knocking down all the pins. The ball and pins are smaller than the inferior 10-pin version 🤭

Near the northwest shore of Little Atlin Lake some of the larger forage operators work the land here. In amongst the bails, cereals like oats & barley are also grown. #cropmap26 #CdnAg #Yukon

Wheat to the west, barley to the east, we end the day with Yukon Grain Farms. Not only a grain grower, they crush their own canola & use the oil in livestock feed they sell. They also have multiple veggie fields incl: potato, cabbage, beet & carrot. All for the local market. #cropmap26 #CdnAg #Yukon

A large field of oats south of Lake Laberge. Still green, a colder than recent averages winter combined with a cool wet spring has left crops behind this season. A warm drier July & early August has helped pull things closer to normal. #cropmap26 #CdnAg #Yukon

Irrigated forages outperform dry land forages. According to my local guide, you get at least 3x the yield…of course irrigation doesn’t happen for free💰. #cropmap26 #CdnAg #Yukon

Some of the tools of the trade that keep this hay field active in the Ibex Valley. Without a large scale industry to support it, you are unlikely to find a lot of newer tractors or implements up here. Simplier is better (& easier to repair). #cropmap26 #CdnAg #Yukon

The territorial Ag land process is a development-based program managed by the Yukon’s Agriculture Branch (who I’m working with this week). Instead of buying the land, you "pay" for the land by investing money, labour, & infrastructure to develop it into a working farm.
