A lot of the terms of the Meta settlement are good changes, but I am begging people to understand that age verification on the internet is Bad, actually — it threatens whistleblowers, minorities, and anyone who cares about free speech. It's SO bad that I wrote about it! ubyssey.ca/opinion/move...

Hot take: this is what Google should do. Using each country's geological data in that country makes sense. The alternative is Google itself being the arbiter of what disputed places are called. Since Google is an American company, it'd probably use USGS, meaning it would say "America" everywhere.

Ok yes the Lake Ontario thing is dumb but is that really what we should be focusing on? There are so many more important things happening, from immigration crackdowns to trans genocide to the war in Iran, and it feels silly to shift ANY amount of the public discourse towards the name of a lake.

Intellectually I know how it's done, but it feels so impressive that we're able to see the galactic center with this level of precision.

There are high-up editors at prestigious publications who wrote or greenlit like dozens of “Moon Base to Open Within Six Years” or “Space Hotel Slated for 2026” headlines. Nothing happened to them. They just get to keep doing it. Wild.

Astronomy popsci is full of slop, and I hate it. It makes it so hard to find actually good astro journalism.
