Same currency. Very different front doors. Q2 2026 house prices: Portugal +16.5%, Finland −2.7% year on year. A 19.2-point gap—but affordability needs more than a price chart. Our new brief asks who gets the keys. Graphic illustrative, not to scale.

The bill has a second address: the treasury. Meloni and Mitsotakis want more room for energy relief. EU flexibility already exists—but how far should it stretch? Our brief follows the money. Graphic: an illustration of the Greek letter's comparison, not a measured price history.

Second-lowest consumer sentiment reading in the published series back to 1952 — and only May was worse. September's print of 48.1 sits below the oil shocks, the financial crash and the pandemic. A verdict on how households feel, not proof today's economy is worse than every past crisis.

The diplomatic scoreboard has moved. China scores 97.7 for diplomatic influence in Asia. America scores 82.7. Pew now finds China viewed more favourably than the US in 25 of 36 countries surveyed. Washington still has the alliances. Beijing has the momentum.

Japan is watching China’s carriers. Beijing is building leverage through trade. China’s military spending has risen for 31 straight years. It now accounts for one dollar in every five of ASEAN’s trade. The fleet is visible. The dependency is quieter.

America has ordered tomorrow’s deterrence. China is testing today’s. US military spending fell 7.5% in real terms in 2025. The FY2027 request is $1.5tn. Meanwhile, PLA aircraft logged 3,764 incursions into Taiwan’s de facto ADIZ. The problem is timing.

Japan’s latest defence white paper is blunt: the balance across the Taiwan Strait is shifting quickly towards China. PLA aircraft entered Taiwan’s de facto ADIZ 3,764 times in 2025, up 22.4% on 2024. An ADIZ is not sovereign airspace, but the pattern is hard to dismiss.
