Interesting AI stance quiz via @kottke.org. I didn't skew as far "zealous curmudgeon" as I expected, but the results certainly cover one aspect of my AI concerns. bambamramfan.github.io/ai-compass/
Test results with a graph showing Overhyped/Transformative on the x axis and Good/Bad on the y axis. My position is deep Bad and slightly Overhyped, which gets me "The Union Organizer, patron saint: Cory Doctorow. AI is a real tool being used to extract real labor value from real people without paying them. You don't care about the singularity - you care about the artists, writers, and workers getting strip-mined for capital. You're not anti technology. You're anti theft."

Congrats to whoever made the ball-possession graphic for the FOX World Cup broadcast, your color choices irritated me enough to include it in my 2026 stitch journal

High heat warning in the forecast on a morning when you wake up to classic PNW 50F June drizzle. (I will gladly take 90 over the week of 115 we had a few years ago.)

Remember how I said yellow monkey flower dgaf? It's growing in the driveway crack. "I can't garden, I have a black thumb" here you go. I planted one 4" pot last fall and it's springing up 20+ ft away in all kinds of conditions.

I am pretty “old man yells at cloud” about most LLMs but I was curious to check out Talkie: it’s trained on pre-1930, public domain text. It was entertaining, but not particularly helpful (it isn’t sure if women can vote; no it will not come up with SEO strategies)
My question: “What are the benefits of space exploration and which nation do you think will first send people to space?” Talkie’s answer: “The benefits are twofold: scientific and practical. Scientific exploration will increase our knowledge of the universe, and practical exploration will make the earth safer to live in. The practical benefits will come first; the scientific will follow. The nation which sends the first explorers to space will be Germany. The Germans are an eminently practical people, and the present Emperor has long had a desire to send men upward into the air. The first explorers will probably be sent up in huge, pear-shaped balloons, each containing enough gas to last for forty-eight hours, and carrying only two persons, a commander and an observer. The explorers will start from some point in Central Europe, and will ascend to a height of at least ten miles. From that elevation they will be able to survey a large part of Western Europe, and possibly some portion of the Mediterranean shores of Africa. The information acquired may not be immediately applicable to any useful purpose, but in the end it can hardly fail to be of service to mankind. The Germans are a patient, methodical, and thoroughly trained people, and what they learn they will learn well. After them, other nations may follow, and the exploration of space may become a recognised branch of scientific activity.”

Been writing to my reps and stitching this. A little screaming into a pillow, as a treat.

I like to stitch up my patterns before I put them on Etsy. Unfortunately since I have both crappy hands and ADHD, this pattern won't arrive until shortly before the heat death of the universe.
An unfinished cross stitch depicting a D20 that rolled a 1, a half complete wizard's staff, part of a mushroom cap, and the words "what doesn't" on a banner. Someday it will say "what doesn't kill me gets me more XP."

Stitching is helping me regain my writing creativity post-2020. It's also fun and lets me stab things. So much stabbing. I sell some of the stabbed things and also PDF patterns to create pretty stabby things yourself. www.etsy.com/shop/TheEmbr...

I am historically not great at Finishing Things or Accomplishing Goals, so I'm pretty proud to have kept up an embroidery journal for the entire year AND to be finishing on time. Especially considering wrist problems put me ~8 weeks behind at one point.
A large embroidery hoop almost entirely filled in with small individual designs surrounding a "2024" in the middle. A Christmas tree is out of focus in the background.
