In yet another victory for nominative determinism, the best air quality in the greater NYC area appeara to be near Pleasantville and Valhalla.

Too long have I had to live among the enemies of peace. I am on the side of peace, but when I speak of it, they are for war.

This is why I'm knocking doors to get @shahanafrombk.bsky.social reelected. At a time when Elon Musk is specifically promising to fund "moderate" Democratic primary challengers against successful progressives, a newcomer who suddenly has money from the GOP's donors is not what my district needs.

Good King Wenceslas showed, by example, the importance of going into the freezing winter to take care of the poor and hungry. In this homily for the Feast of Stephen, I ask you to tell @mayorsoffice.nyc.gov to continue funding for homelessness outreach services for January onwards:
Screenshot of New York Daily News article "Layoffs loom at NYC street homeless outreach...":

Ever since 2019, the city Department of Homeless Services has annually allocated $8 million in so-called “hotspot funding” for nonprofit groups that deploy staff who provide New Yorkers living on the streets with medical care and try to persuade them to enter shelter or other housing.

However, the municipal government’s 2025 fiscal year budget, which was first adopted in June by Mayor Adams and the City Council, only renewed the hotspot funding at $4 million covering the first six months of the fiscal year — meaning the allocation is set to dry up on Jan. 1. There were discussions at the time the budget passed that the second half of the funding would be allocated later in the year, sources say.

I ended up writing lengthy written testimony to @council.nyc.gov about why Intro 606, the proposed bill to make the city issue license plates to e-bikes, does not solve the important problems that it claims to solve and why a serious approach is needed: ldpreload.com/p/intro-606-...
December 13, 2024

Dear council members,

There is a saying attributed to H. L. Mencken: “For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong.” At Wednesday's hearing, we heard the author of Intro 606 repeatedly characterize his bill as a “simple” and “common sense” solution. It is certainly simple—too simple to meaningfully address the problems it is claimed to address. Those problems are serious and complex, and they deserve a serious answer.

I write today (and I also testified on Wednesday) to oppose the unserious approach in Intro 606, as well as to support Intro 1131, not because I have any particular fondness for more task forces and studies, but because it is clear we do not yet know the right answer to these problems and they deserve a thoughtful answer.

The Arrow Linen project received lots of comment. Some opponents testified saying, rents are too high and this should be a 100% affordable building, with no market rate units. What that position means—whether they intend this meaning or not—is "This lot should sit empty, like 431 Concord."

An applicant wants to build 87 apartments in the Bronx, 24 permanently rent capped ("affordable"). Why not more? "431 Concord across the street, proposed at 100% affordability, was approved in 2021 and has not been built." Insisting on 100% affordable housing gets you 100% of zero.
