#NatD 18 makes me sound like more of a lunatic than @calloflunacy.bsky.social yet HE didn't even hear me
This image is signed by me and watermarked with my LCRising.gay website. On a blank, light green background is a cartoon of my ginger-ass self standing at a window, blowing on a mug. I'm wearing dark clothes, eyeliner, and spiked glasses. Looking out the window, I'm effectively looking at the white body text.
Title for this ongoing series is green and white reading "Nature at the door Part 18". Text body reads ". I must be getting used to having no neighbour close by, because I yelled at the sky 'Thanks for not murdering me!' and nobody got nosy at my door."

Retroactively going to tag @scottmccloud.bsky.social and @nsousanis.bsky.social as fellow comic nerds, the latter especially because I see "tag me if you do xyz" on just about every page of his website! I did just 4 pages to be practical w/ what I was clipping to my notebook. Some commentary in alt
pages 2 & 3 of the quoted comics exercise, still in pink pen with occasional red. I chose to make it a booklet or 4 page zine on printer paper.
page 2 has 8 panels, page 3 arguably has 6 panels. All 4 pages are based in 3 rows roughly a third page each.
further comments:
Throughout, I've made conscious (and unconscious) simplification choices. You can see my own finger tips for scale; a given panel might be up to a single centimeter tall, so it's a must to do things like draw a u-shaped mouth and sideways-8 glasses as Scott's only facial features, or have a long-sleeve flannel pattern representative of his entire upper outfit.
The outdoor lighting may make it hard to make out where I have used red pen over the pink to highlight features like explicit panel borders, where a character's feet show, or the silhouettes around important body language.
Other fun things in my 1/8th letter-size pages: erasable pen faded to low visibility to represent where McCloud drew penciled work. Absolute & unerasable butchering of scale in panel 1 (compared to the original I'm referencing). consistent poor choice of simplification on his desk lamp. a lot of unnecessary attention on hands when they're a primary subject of a panel.page 4 of the continued exercise, which is the back of the booklet. These 7 panels required McCloud to use a huge variety of drawing types and techniques, which is likely why I found it more challenging or time consuming. There's an architectural scene, a unique perspective panel that looks like a framed diorama, a panel of 3 identical hands in a row, & a close up portrait, to name a few in the variety.
it's fun to see the stark shadow at left as natural light changed in just the few moments between photos. This page used a bit more cheating via erasable pen under some of the art, to help prevent blatant errors of relative scale. This still occurred on the second to last, borderless panel showing three hands--which didn't use this cheat but perhaps should have.
further commentary: Scott basically disappears in the last panel's shaded background, when he should be holding up the orb of the earth. a hatched background to the bottom left panel of buildings, because the need to imply more buildings was way more important than copying how McCloud had drawn the more elaborate scene. The first panel included scratched out characters and writing, but I instead used vague hatch marks in the lightest pink pen of the booklet.
The second panel, which doesn't depict McCloud, has the hint of an expression and even has a nose. It also has my favorite hand of the exercise, despite it not being as large or focused as most of the rest.
The most obviously pre sketched panel is a 1-point perspective of Scott in a furnished and decorated room. Said panel still has all lettering left out, even though the back "wall" should be entirely huge text.

the waxy white back of a nametag sticker, that's already been peeled off the front. Smudged, thin pen made various smudged, tiny squares and figures. the top has 3 descending and 3 ascending stairs. there's a line of stick figures at left, walking along a line with text: "click snap click hip therapist lied". Below that is a mockup of a 2 page spread with a similar 4 figures at the top; Most of the rest of it would be incomprehensible to the viewer.
Yes, I used a colourful book for photo contrast underneath. yes, the nearest book was in fact Scott McCloud's Making Comics.

After today's Comics in Academia panel, I'm (re)reading my Scott McCloud books & doing one of my favourite things in the world: Messy thumbnail renditions of comic pages for my cartooning study notes. No pencil allowed, just two pens/page YouTube recording of the panel: youtube.com/live/gymwh40...
one ninth of a printer page with a pink and red, just-barely-recognisable, reverse-engineered thumbnail of page one of Scott McCloud's "Making Comics." There's not yet any lettering or speech balloons. The tiny page rests on a spiral notebook, covering the edge of scrawled notes.
I'm going to identify panel variations in the first five pages, then occasionally analyse them as case studies as I read my comics textbooks (including lettering one from Blambot)

I made a lil reference zine (Lulo-brain compatible) based on this handy visual guide & main ideas from @boneyhag.bsky.social 's "Just make your comic!" earlier in Nib & Ink fest (:
Back "cover" of a handwritten 8-page folded print paper. its divided into thirds with 3 wide panels that say "3 panel pages." under panels is captions that read: 5-in-5 is 15, 3x5 is 15, math checks out.

I don't get to not think about it. (screenshot of a popular Tumblr text post. its about disability and the burden of considering it constantly when you have it, while others don't understand that it's ALWAYS something to be considerate of, and they should include themselves in that)
tumblr user ragingpeacock:
"Is funny when doctors and other peeps act like my problem is that I'm obsessed w/ my disability. Um no. You have it backwards. The problem is I HAVE to be cuz it is a constant problem."

the lengthy end of post by Tumblr user andreashettle, illustrating & elaborating with an anecdote:

"I'm deaf. About 25 years ago, I was working for a little while as a classroom aide at a program that worked with deaf children with multiple disabilities. All the teachers and other classroom aides were hearing, but they all could sign. Not at native signing level, but enough to carry on a basic conversation.

So, one evening, all us adults bring all the kids to a special one-night camping trip. All the kids are put to sleep, which frees up the adults to get into a circle and have some fun to ourselves for a while. People start talking, except they were forgetting to sign. So I reminded them to please sign so I could understand them. One of them told me that, no, they weren't going to sign because this was our night to have fun and not have to think about communication.

So no one signed all night. They talked, they laughed, they had fun. I sat, feeling lost and cut off and betrayed. I remember wishing I had had the nerve to say, 'No, what you mean is, you want a night in which everyone EXCEPT ME gets to not think about communication.'

I think sometimes when non-disabled people insist that we are too obsessed with our disability, what they REALLY mean is, 'I wish you would stop reminding me that I have a shared responsibility as a fellow member of society to proactively ensure that we all have an opportunity to be engaged in society. I wish you would just pretend to not have a disability so I can pretend that I don't have to do anything to enable you to do the same things the rest of us are doing.'

The luxury of not needing to think about disability in a society that is designed to lock us on the cold outside is a non-disabled privilege."

So the white text body reads: "Needed grill propane today, so we went to the feed store. Turns out our 2 gallon tank isn't working to refill.
