New paper out! ☄️ Extremely-low-resolution spectroscopy from Gaia is great at finding white dwarfs hosting remnant planetary systems! However, identifying hosts who originate from B- and A-type stars is more challenging and requires precise metal-enriched atmospheric fits. ➡️ arxiv.org/abs/2609.22033

Searching for Massive Remnant Planetary System Hosts with White Dwarf Gaia XP Spectra
Remnant planetary systems around massive white dwarfs ($M_{\rm WD} > 0.8\,{\rm M}_\odot$) are intrinsically rare and remain poorly characterized. As the evolutionary endpoints of intermediate-mass B- ...

Great result from BU graduate student @lbor.bsky.social hit the arXiv today shedding light on the origins of strange white dwarfs that have stopped cooling for billions of years: "WD Merger Remnants with Cooling Delays on the Q Branch Lack Strong Magnetism" arxiv.org/abs/2602.02670 (1/7)

White Dwarf Merger Remnants with Cooling Delays on the Q Branch Lack Strong Magnetism
A population of anomalous ultra-massive white dwarfs discovered with Gaia, often referred to as the Q branch, show high (multi-Gyr) cooling delays produced by exotic physical mechanisms. They are beli...
