Hope End. Not a counterstrike against Andy Burnham's "Hope Again" speech from yesterday, but Elizabeth Barrett Browning's (EBB) childhood-to-early-adulthood home in Ledbury, Herefordshire. The actual house EBB lived in was demolished in the 19th C, but another was built in its place.

Thoroughly enjoyed Gerri Kimber’s new biog of Katherine Mansfield. So compelling was it that I read it in just two sittings. KM’s life is so meticulously researched & beautifully told by Kimber that I couldn’t put the book down. I feel I “know” KM much better than I ever did before.

This afternoon, we visited the small medieval town of San Gimignano (SG) in the Tuscan hills. Forster based the fictional town of Monteriano on SG in his first published novel, Where Angels Fear to Tread (1905). WAFTT actually still had the working title “Monteriano” at the proof stage.

This afternoon, we visited Casa Guidi, home to poets Elizabeth Barrett Browning (EBB) & Robert Browning from 1847-61. The couple eloped to Italy in 1846 to escape EBB’s father’s disapproval of their marriage. It was whilst living in Casa Guidi that EBB wrote Aurora Leigh & Casa Guidi Windows.

This morning, we visited the Hotel Jennings Riccioli on the banks of the Arno in Florence. Now private apartments, it used to be known as the Pensione Simi & was where EM Forster stayed with his mother in 1901-2. Pensione Simi was the inspiration for Pensione Bertolini in A Room with a View (1908)

*** Lecturer in British Romantic Literature *** £41,064 to £46,049 per annum University of Glasgow #English #poetry #romanticism #Literature #HigherEd www.jobs.ac.uk/job/DSS069/l...
Applications are invited from candidates with an appropriate record of academic achievement in English Literature, with a proven research and teaching specialism in British Romantic Literature. We especially welcome applicants working on British Romantic-period theatre and Digital Humanities, who have an appetite for academic leadership, knowledge of university systems and experience of working as part of a team within a university environment.

Candidates should have a Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) or equivalent in English Literature, with a substantial publication profile and significant experience teaching and supervising within the subject area in higher education.

English Literature is a subject that works closely with the School of Critical Studies’ other subject areas of English Language and Linguistics, Scottish Literature and Theology and Religious Studies. The School is also home to programmes in Creative Writing and in Global Communications. In its research, the School fosters excellent connections with collaborators across Glasgow and beyond, and English Literature colleagues work actively and impactfully with local partners towards public engagement with their research and publications. The study of the Romantic period is a particular strength of English Literature at the University of Glasgow, and this post will enhance that profile.

Informal enquiries should be directed to the English Literature Head of Subject Professor Stephen Burn (Stephen.Burn@glasgow.ac.uk)

Visit our website for further information about the University of Glasgow and the School of Critical Studies www.gla.ac.uk/schools/critical.

Closing date: 9th September 2026 at 23:45
