100% the worst thing about the UK heatwave is my router crapping out. I had my suspicions but seeing Claude tell me it's probably overheating has really ended me.

I have a habit of starting something that can lock me down for literally days and have mild regret when I look back and realise. This thread... there's about 40 PRs in it. I started this "while I wait for the other agent to finish up"

I am actually really loving it! And am changing a bunch of our runbooks to lean into this pattern.

We upgraded AI SRE to use Opus 4.7 yesterday after running a bunch of benchmarks against various incidents to check how it performs. For anyone looking at a similar upgrade, some takeaways…

Am speaking at ai.engineer Europe this Friday on "Fighting AI with AI" about how we use AI tooling internally at @incident.io to manage the complexity of building AI SRE. It's at 12:20pm in Fleming on the Coding Agents track for anyone who is around!

In which case user error on my part misinterpreting what you’d said. Which is kinda funny, this is entirely a human and comms error and shows how fallible normal life is, which is the baseline to compare AI to. The AI in general is much better at this than 90% of humans would be.

I'm guessing you were on ChatGPT rather than Claude and using one of the free models for this, as Claude will tell you straight up this isn't supported. The crux of my argument was you need to know specifically what tech you're using before judging it, as the models vary so much.

Also I did check this with Opus 4.6. It's pretty good at saying this is actually a hard request to fulfil and why and I've spot checked the links: they seem good!

Then honestly it's just small papercuts that we never would have prioritised but can be done automatically by either Cursor or Claude. Think it's telling that they are now the top contributors to our github (last month)

I was in a thread on Reddit just 2 weeks ago where I asked who people would actually listen to on this. Downvoted to hell, funny how this is playing out.

Was fun changing our Old Street billboard to focus on eng hiring last Friday. Went a few rounds with the team and felt this represented us well!

One nice touch is the “Note from the team” with all our faces on the signature. I think it really captures how the team feels, from our ‘win together’ mindset to the pride we take in our work. I’ve attached a copy with a big “WE’RE HIRING” message because…
Note from the team about our work, and a callout that we are hiring!

Was playing with some CI build time improvements yesterday and booting big old machines is something I will always enjoy. 96 cores go brrrrrr

Gotten into the habit of getting AI to check my code piece-by-piece as I build systems. Doesn't replace a human or a review, but it frequently catches issues I'd otherwise miss or only find once I'd deployed. Can't recommend this enough!

This was a fun chat about how we're building an AI incident responder, which: - Checks your Grafana dashboards - Looks at recent PRs - Finds past incidents like this one And drops a message just like this one I got this morning when I broke our evals 😂
Slack message posted to the incident channel correctly identifying the bad code I shipped this morning as the cause.

Yeah, get real comfortable with pass rates and what that means for your CI!

We've got a new game at work "Cold Case Mysteries" where people submit a picture of their fridge and then we all guess who it is. I thought this would be funny but did not anticipate a character assassination.

This is a really good idea and is, as you say, really easy. Less easy to do on device but genuinely would do an amazing amount of good to flag this stuff for people who otherwise wouldn’t know.

Guys this whole 12 day thing is a terrible idea, this tree was emotionally load bearing 😭

I pushed all my git history into Gemini earlier, everything for the last year, then asked it to categorise PRs against themes. Eventually I got a graph of what I've been working on and when across the year. I've wanted to do this for years, cool how easy it is now.

Urgh yeah, that sounds like bad prompts. Is it weird that I find it difficult to imagine Apple screwing up like that? Reminding me of just the other week 😂

This is genuinely an incredible process that's reducing time-to-fix config errors to ~30s, but the personal insults keep coming 😂 Almost everything is "ah yes! this is totally archaic!"

I've maintained a vimrc for about 13 years. A better engineer would have removed things in that time, but I did not. Since then s/Vim/Neovim/, and s/vimscript/Lua/, which had put me off a full rebuild. Turns out for the price of a light hazing, Claude can upgrade the whole settings file for me!
Claude telling me my choice of vim plugins is no longer in vogue

Alright that went great! 1. Rest for 5m 2. Hot skillet for 45s each side with butter and garlic 3. Rest for 5m more Quite fun getting to play with both the meater and my Fujifilm at the same time, ngl. Being home alone is not good for me.

Pretty cool, you get all the temperatures live to your phone with an eta on cooking time. Nice touch to have the Dynamic Island working too.

Game plan is reverse sear in oven until 51/52 degrees (Celsius) then rest for 5m before cast iron skillet to finish with butter and garlic. God speed Bessie 🫡

Got a cool new meat thermometer that’s fully Bluetooth for Christmas so decided to try it out today. M&S only had a thin rib eye so it’s quite overkill but here we go!

My family dog stands here for extended periods of time slow cooking herself, refusing to move away. I expect having a fire each night is her favourite part of Christmas.

Until AI I'd never developed anything that felt so pay-to-play. We've put $ cost on all our interactions to get a sense of our usage and it can be quite wild.

Urgh, missing the og-social links. And I spent all that time thinking up Schrödinger's Pager 😡
incident.io mobile app receiving a page saying "On-call paging is broken" that's escalating to Schrödinger's Pager.

Now 8 hours into what should’ve been a 2.5 hour journey, sat on the floor of a train going at 5mph through a flooded tunnel outside of Milton Keynes. I can think of better ways to spend a Sunday.

I had a browse through some old issues and reckon it’s fair to say some friction! Lots of great CLI libraries in Go too. This is said as someone who loves Ruby but would choose Go out of pragmatism if I was shipping code to end users.

I’ve been on-call this weekend and been excitedly awaiting a page so I could dogfood some features we’ve built this week. Sadly, looks like the teams work cleaning up alerts has worked great and I’ve not been paged once 😂 Swings and roundabouts.

I _love_ working with great designers. Ignoring all the benefits of building product, here's a doc I'd hammered together in Notion that the team have yassified recently. Makes a huge difference to present your brand like this.
