Open call for a show "In The Zone", a show I'm curating at the Museum of Human Achievement in Austin: moha.wiki/In_the_Zone:...
2026 is truly the year of strung-out gamblers and grift-ers. The highest levels of government and business are rampant with bare-faced, hardly concealed corruption and bribery. Crypto meme coins are still, somehow, prevalent. Every book, website, picture, and, most im-portantly, every dollar, is force fed through a trough of
"AI" systems, a capital investment which itself is an extraordinarily risky bet wagered by the ultra-rich on the future of the economy (and possibly human extinction, if you believe the hype), with the rest of us sacrificed as collateral. Popular prediction markets like Kalshi and Polymarket let anyone bet it all on nearly anything, and as a result any tidbit of knowledge gleaned from even the most banal interaction becomes a potential windfall. It's the democratization of insider trading, or as the founder of Kalshi has put it, everything becomes financialized and every difference in opinion becomes a tradable asset.With multiple extinction events (both real and imag-ined) looming large, a fully eroded middleclass, and fascism on the screen and in the streets, there's never been a better time to gamble away what little savings you have in a last-ditch, almost certainly hopeless effort to escape what the silicon valley overlords have termed the "permanent underclass."
In this exciting, near-terminal moment, we invite artists to contribute works to 'In The Zone".
, an upcoming
exhibit/casino at The Museum of Human Achievement (MoHA) in Austin, TX. We are seeking works that respond to gambling or games of chance in some form, and themselves can be gambled on. These might include unconventional slot machines or other forms of machine gambling, works that critically engage with prediction markets (and/or are prediction markets), day trading schemes, NFTs, crypto scams, insider trad-ing exchanges, and so on. Feel free to incorporate the classics as well; roulette, bingo, craps, poker, two-up, blackjack, pull tabs, rigged carnival games, subprime mortgage collapses, beanie babies, scratch offs, meat raffles, dog racing, tulips, and so on.
Works of all formats are accepted, as long as they can be gambled on. Artists are invited to create new works, or to add gambling mechanisms to existing pieces.
Works in the show should not accept actual currency
(US dollars, crypto, etc), and will instead make use of "Human Dollars", a fictional currency that MoHA will provide to guests. Artists may incorporate currency input/output mechanisms directly into their works, or employ an honor system to deal with payments and winnings.

my favorite 'ai' company is probably "Labs": a "superintelligence Human-enhancement technology supercompany". They make a "Social-Taste Superapp" (!!!!!) called "Yuhmmy". We live in a golden age!

Last year @tega.bsky.social and I contributed an essay to the book "Are You a Software Update". For our research, we scraped the names, descriptions, and funding totals of around 17,000 "AI" companies from crunchbase. You can explore this sad, searchable archive for yourself at aicompanies.labr.io

Offset Marketplace is a new project in collaboration with @tega.bsky.social. We calculate the carbon savings of industrial sabotage, package these savings into carbon credits, and sell them as certificates. Profits are then donated back to the activists responsible for the actions. offset.labr.io

But even though the knife was big and sharp, and the bread neither too soft nor too hard, the knife could not cut into it. We children looked up at Father in surprise. He said, “Why should you be surprised? Isn’t it more surprising if something succeeds than if it fails? Go to bed, perhaps I’ll manage it later.” We went to bed, but every now and again, at all hours of the night, one or another of us got up and craned his neck to look at Father, who stood there, a big man in his long coat, his right leg braced behind him, seeking to drive the knife into the bread. When we woke up early in the morning, Father was just laying the knife aside, and said, “You see, I haven’t managed yet, that’s how hard it is.” We wanted to distinguish ourselves, and he gave us permission to try, but we could hardly lift the knife, whose handle was still almost glowing from Father’s efforts;
