One explanation is that this is simple oversight — a failure of imagination in an area most people would never think about. And I’m sure there’s something to that.

But David Thiel, who wrote the report along with Alex Stamos and Renee DiResta, worried that larger, industry-wide forces could be at play in Meta’s failure. The overall investment in trust and safety teams has declined, he wrote in a Mastodon post, amid mass layoffs in the tech industry and political pressures to stop removing content.

“It is my sense that there has been an overall disinvestment in Trust and Safety by the major platforms, following political blowback over platforms actioning political and health mis/disinformation,” said Thiel, who is the chief technologist of the Stanford Internet Observatory and a former Facebook employee. “T&S and research teams have been decimated in Twitter, and to a lesser degree inside Meta.
