AI strategy at the FCA. Views mine and only mine. Recovering academic (Legal {tech, philosophy}, hci, compsci, regulation, responsible innovation). Diver rhymes with river (it's an anglicisation of the Gaelic Duibhir). tbh I'd rather be in Assynt

See also this from Private Eye
Picture of a column in Private Eye reading 'A-EYE: Who or what is behind the direction of the government's AI policy? According to Minister for Artificial Intelligence, Kanishka Narayan, it's, er, AI! Talking to Politico at the Labour party conference, Narayan said he had used "AI-generated synthetic focus groups provided by a private company... to test public opinion on AI and other issues". You may not relish the tech being forced into every element of your life - but don't worry, the made-up voters advising government think it's a great idea!

Bank of England Governor sounding the alarm on the AI finance bubble in a letter to the G20 (28 Aug): www.fsb.org/uploads/P310...
Screengrab of part of Andrew Bailey's letter to the G20: "The issue is not simply that investors are borrowing more, but that leverage is interacting with high valuations and market concentration, in particular the increasing cross-investment between artificial intelligence (AI) companies and hyper scalers, in a way that could amplify a future market correction. I remain concerned therefore that a large shock or combination of shocks could concurrently trigger multiple vulnerabilities."

An actual Chinese Room moment I was testing Claude just now and these two Chinese characters appeared in the middle of its (English) output. They translate as 'recommend', which is the 'right' word for this point in the sentence ("I'd actually recommend keeping...")
A screengrab of a Claude output in English, showing two Chinese characters for 'recommend' in place of the equivalent English word.

But this, about Anthropic's 'resident philosopher', Claude 'constitution' scribbler and arch-EA Amanda Askell 'teaching Claude to be good', is incredible:
Quote from The New Yorker article about Anthropic, describing what its 'resident philosopher' Amanda Askell purports to do: "She compares her work to the efforts of a parent raising a child. She’s training Claude to detect the difference between right and wrong while imbuing it with unique personality traits. She’s instructing it to read subtle cues, helping steer it toward emotional intelligence so it won’t act like a bully or a doormat. Perhaps most importantly, she’s developing Claude’s understanding of itself so it won’t be easily cowed, manipulated or led to view its identity as anything other than helpful and humane. Her job, simply put, is to teach Claude how to be good."

Followed by the commentary "Poppycock. She’s doing none of those things. She’s writing science fiction which will be used by a mathematical equation to alter the statistical likelihood of a computer program choosing some tokens rather than other tokens as its output. Saying that any of this is teaching a chatbot philosophy is like calling yourself a psychiatrist because you thought about Oedipus while jacking off."

What a time to be alive... 'serving suggestions' were always aspirational but at least in principle they were, em, real

This bit could be a description of some other, er, well-known sectors 👀
A quote from the linked article, reading 'What are these movies?” the Hollywood producer asked me. “Are they successful movies? Are they not? They have famous people in them. They get put out by major studios. And yet because we don’t have any reliable numbers from the streamers, we actually don’t know how many people have watched them. So what are they? If no one knows about them, if no one saw them, are they just something that people who are in them can talk about in meetings to get other jobs? Are we all just trying to keep the ball rolling so we’re just getting paid and having jobs, but no one’s really watching any of this stuff? When does the bubble burst? No one has any fucking clue.”'
