In this first week of open class, we are talking about fun ways to use a behavior before the reward in order to prevent the dog from thinking about moving forwards towards us. Ginny is apparently a bit rusty in her reverse sends! #dogsports #dogtraining

If I hear a person tell their dog once “no sniff “then I’ll be hearing it 100 more times. Ginny found the environment at the UKI invitational tough. A ton of sniffing that I felt was both a mixture of stress, and also some opportunistic searching for the thousands of crumbs. #dogsports #agility

I realized I never got to training right pivots with Ravi before his food trial. So we are using a toy, but he’s making it pretty easy for me! #dogsports #sighthound #dogtraining #heelwork

Ravioli is still working on fronts with his perch and how to think with a toy reward. I can’t wait until we can train outside again! #Dogsports #obediencedog #rallyobedience #dogtraining

Movement to stillness. Excitement to control. I love having this game as a foundation for my dogs. Ginny is not a dog prone to “over arousal” butits a good game to do with her on the start line if she can’t do her happy boing right away. #dogsports #dogtraining

Ravioli didn’t want to mark his toy on the ground but putting it on the bucket made it look more like his cookie on a target I was able to resume working on a tiny bit of lateral distance! If you want marking for agility or obedience there’s still time to join class! #dogsports #agility

Loot finds fronts just so tough! Constantly going back to pivot foundations to help him. It’s the same foundations with the dumbbell as without! #dogsports #akcobedience #dogtraining

Loot loves to work while holding his toy. So comforting. It’s always a very expensive behavior to offer to drop his toy and mentally let go of it. And this, this is just pure flow and joy for him. . #dogsports #dogtraining #heelwork

Today’s the day! Class has begun on teaching a focus forward cue!!! As I’ve been sitting here watching the EOTT for Agility, I am struck by just how many of these start lines have benefited from that mark skill! And Helo is just starting 😁 #dogsports #agility #dogtraining

I love using a cone for working position changes! It adds a layer of difficulty by adding motion into it. But is also much more fun! And bonus that thinking about going around the cone makes it easier to prevent creeping towards me. I mixed up all three positions with Ginny #dogsports #dogtraining

Wanting to learn a look forward cue for obedience or agility startline? 3 week class starting March 1st! This was Helo’s first lesson. I wasn’t quite as coordinated as I hoped but we started! #dogsports #DogTraining #agility

Ravioli is learning foundations for heeling games! Do a movement release, then suck back into heel. He was confused at first so I grabbed a prop. Going from energy to precision is a core part of heeling! Join me in my online novice obedience class on now with FDSA! #dogsports #dogtraining

Ravioli is working on heeling with his toy! I warm up with luring him to heel and working that pause after the toy release. I want him confident in waiting in heel position and not offering random movement or spinning out to look at me easier. Then I start left squares #dogsports #dogtraining

Default standby! This is an important foundation for my dogs. It builds that routine of going out and coming right back. It teaches them to go from moving to stillness. To be patient! #dogsports #dogtraining #sighthound

continuing to work on Ravioli’s understanding of a retrieve and resilience with his dumbbell. He already knows how to move with a db, and I’ve done the prerequisite in teaching him how to nose target the bucket. So now we’re starting cleanup trick! #dogtricks #dogsports

I’ll use this before going in a ring for Obed/rally, and a modified one for agility. also nice for delays in the ring or just needing to talk without getting the dog out of work mode. Going from full off-duty to ON can be a big ask for our non workaholic dogs! Ring confidence class 2/1! #dogsports

Starting box feeding with Raviol to learn a “sticky target” The lowered head is also my prerequisite for the skill of “cleanup” or put the thing in the thing. I want the dog targeting the bucket and not flinging #DogTraining #dogsports #dogtricks

Trying to post something happy. So here is Ginny with a pop stand on recall. She wants to pop about 6 feet forward! I’m using a target not to help her respond to my cue, but to try and get her to pop more up and not so much flight! #dogsports #dogtraining #toller

Working fronts and struggling to fade a platform? I struggle with that too! I teach pivots in front bc it transfers so easily from a perch to none. I talk about front pivots in my novice class! Working spots still available, and we can look at your heel work too #dogsports #dogtraining

Ravioli’s energy track for heeling is starting to get there! Heeling can be fun! Ravi has a lot of precision skills at a slow pace, but I’m not yet ready to combine that with this energy track. I talk a lot about trying to get that balance in my novice class! #dogsports #dogtraining

Pivots are the core of front work just like they’re the core of heeling! I don’t know how I would teach my dog how to line up with me if I couldn’t pivot away to communicate which way their butt needs to go! Join me in February if you want some help, or just get started! #dogsports #dogtraining

Working on the left about turn with Ginny as she has gone around the sign several time in a trial. here I’m using something more tempting than a sign – a target! My cues do look similar, and it doesn’t help that we’ve been working a lot of sends for her threadle wrap and sit! #Dogsports #rallydog

Laura Waudby @laurawaudby.bsky.social · 15/01/2026
Front pivots are a huge part of teaching my dog that front is a specific position to line up to, not just sit close. I start to pivot away from Ravi before he stops moving in order to proactively prevent a mistake. Start thinking about my novice class for Feb! #Dogsports #dogtraining #rallydog

Toy skills!! I want the ability to easily line him up with a toy in the same way that I can use a cookie magnet with food. This is helpful for both Agility as well as obedience! Then I want default stillness so he’s not just sending out ahead to the obstacle he thinks is next! #agility #dogsports

Preparing for rally! The send to cone and sit already had the foundations in place, but I haven’t asked Ginny to turn away from me on a cone send before. Glad it went smoothly! This is easier to get into heel than if she wrapped clockwise and sat next to the cone. #dogsports #rallydog #toller

I don’t need my dogs to be able to backup far, but I do need a backup when they’re across the ring from me. I mainly use this for distance work in obedience such as before and after position changes, drop on recall, even start lines. . #dogsports #obediencedog #dogtraining #sighthound

Ginny sat before her backup in heel at the last rally trial. So I’m working on a stand in motion before the backup. She has a moving stand but I almost always do her “pop” and that’s not very conducive to this backup exercise! . #dogsports #rallydog #rallyobedience

Reset practice!! Have a plan for what you’re going to do in the ring if things go wrong. In rally you can redo a sign if the dog didn’t get it right, or if they need focus help. Make sure your dog is used to how you’re going to reset so they don’t think they’re wrong! #dogtraining #dogsports

Ravi can pickup and bring the dumbbell to me, and can hold the db when I give it to him. But I hadn’t yet combined the 2 pieces to get the formal ending needed for the full retrieve. Here I’m working on just the action of sitting and not dropping the dumbbell #dogsports #DogTraining
