Connie, mum of three girls, is at the centre of things, just as she was in Parks’ first novel, Playing Away. The novel is built around a shock pregnancy announcement from Connie’s eldest daughter, Fran, who is 21 and home from university for Christmas with her new boyfriend.

#OurBeautifulMess is Adele Parks’ 25th novel in 25 years and shockingly the first one I’ve read. I took it on holiday with me and it couldn’t have made for more perfect sunlounger reading, with shock after shock after shock.

It’s tense and taut and really makes you think about what and who matters the most. I think this will be huge next year, and deservedly so. Big thanks to @louiseswannell.bsky.social and @headlinebooks.bsky.social for my early proof. #Room706

It’s an extreme wrong place at the wrong time scenario, because both Kate and James are happily married to other people. They meet every few months for sex. It’s also the story of Kate and Vic, the husband she’s betraying in a bid to keep hold of herself.

There’s a lot of hype around #Room706 by @ellielevenson.bsky.social, despite it not coming out until early next year, and I was desperate to get my hands on it. It tells the story of Kate and James, who are trapped in a hotel room when the building is taken under siege by a terrorist group.

There are strong power issues at play, and Williams delves into the murky waters of sexual relationships that feel morally wrong despite being legal and consensual. The prose is beautiful, and it’s thought-provoking and compelling in the way all the best novels are.

#BitterSweet by Hattie Williams has a coming-of-age vibe, and I’m a sucker for that. It’s about a young female publicity assistant at a publishing house and her relationship with a much older, married male novelist.

Both of Sarah’s voices felt authentic, and the past shines light on the present in terms of the way Sarah has lived her life. It all builds to a confrontation and series of revelations that were deeply moving.

This is a dual timeline novel. In the present, Sarah is spending a few days away with her sister Juliette to celebrate Juliette’s 40th birthday. In the past, 26 years before, Sarah is 15 and obsessed with her teacher, Mr Keaveney.

I was drawn to #Slags because I thought it would be funny (it is) and nostalgic for a person who was a teenage girl in the 90s (it is) and because it’s called Slags, which is a pretty ballsy title. What I wasn’t expecting was for it to rip me apart emotionally.

Me: What did you and F play at school? 9yo: Well, I spent most of break trying to get my foot out of the railings. Me: And did F help with that? 9yo: Yes. And I summoned quite a crowd.

Interestingly, the story’s told by another journalist, Sophie, who is staying with Alex for the duration of the festival. This seemed like a strange choice at first but worked really well, because Sophie was aligned with Hayley because of her gender but with Alex because…

In #BringtheHouseDown by Charlotte Runcie, theatre critic Alex gives comedian Hayley’s Edinburgh festival show a one-star review and then sleeps with her, resulting in her changing her entire act in an attempt to bring him down.

#BookBoyfriend is such an enjoyable and funny novel, featuring two very different twins and potential love interests ranging from a moody librarian to a lovely housemate to a semi-famous actor. I loved trying to work out which direction it would go. @simonschusteruk.bsky.social

From there, it goes to places I didn’t imagine, and it’s packed with secrets. The book takes place over a hot summer, and tension sizzles in the background of all the relationships. @transworldbooks.bsky.social #CatFight

#CatFight by @kitconwayauthor.bsky.social is such an original take on the psychological thriller. Set in an exclusive housing development in Sevenoaks, Kent, it centres around three couples and kicks off with an alleged sighting of a wild cat on the bonnet of a car.

My 8yo just told me that she’s been working on a project ‘for several years’ to work out whether she naturally stands with legs straight or slightly bent, but whenever she thinks about it she automatically straightens them. I miss being a child.
