As with the administration's other deregulatory actions, this one doesn't include health or premature death in its cost-benefit analysis because they say it's too hard. So any cost-savings estimate they come up with is BS.

Did you see the slippery slope argument he made part way through? However, I do agree with him that the IRS needs to be able to collect taxes that are owed, meaning it needs to be adequately funded and staffed. Not cut over and over.

The courts made a difference, too. The proposed rule says agencies have to say WHY they are terminating a grant mid-award, and explicitly says DOGE's single infuriating sentence about administration goals won't cut it anymore (though OMB says it's "not an exceptionally high bar").

Congress does make a difference sometimes. Way down in the OMB's announcement, they said Congress told them not to mess with Indirect Costs (limited time period), so they won't and don't comment about Indirect because they will ignore your comment.

agree with you re: for-profit healthcare. "Most Medicare Advantage Plans include Medicare drug coverage (Part D)." Medicare and You 2026 p 64. However, if you chose original Medicare (with or without a separate Medigap plan) you need a separate Part D plan or face penalties if you add it later.

Also, this proposal is basically an end-run around the Privacy Act, which prohibits the USPS from just hoovering up names and addresses from Election Mail, if you were wondering why they even need the states to provide a list of names and addresses of voters to whom they are mailing ballots.

One consequence of their not using the government Regulations portal for comments is you can't see others' comments unless you go in person to DC and get an appointment to view. I wonder if the fact that the USPS isn't technically a government agency has anything to do with it.
