Inside the Tel Aviv Scrabble club waging war against The National
HUNDREDS of IPSO complaints appear to have been submitted against The National by members of a Scrabble club in Tel Aviv.

We found that this individual and Michelle are connected via their local Tel Aviv Scrabble club. It appears to be a co-ordinated attack on our coverage of Israel's genocide, coming from inside Israel. It is taking up huge amounts of our time and it's clearly vexatious.

Anyway recently we noticed a new person submitting very similar complaints but with a different name. So we started investigating.

Michelle's complaints can be incredibly semantic in nature. Not just complaints that you might expect, eg being upset at us using the word genocide. One recent complaint involved her distress over us writing Fifa in lower case. It's endless.

We have been handling hundreds of complaints from one woman in Tel Aviv, named Michelle Moshelian, for some time. The numbers of complaints from this one individual is so extreme that it caught the attention of Private Eye recently

So there's this Tel Aviv Scrabble club which appears to be co-ordinating a flood of spurious complaints about The National's coverage of Gaza, resulting in literally hundreds of Ipso processes for us to go through. Let me explain ...

I don't have a position on the motion myself, my point is just I note how few of the Jewish people in favour of the motion have been given space to speak in the media, which is funny because there were so many of them.
011
Laura Webster @lauraewebster.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I mean yeah I found that quite hard to understand too, that's for the members to explain. I think their position is that it wasn't necessary and would have implied that the initial motion was putting them at risk, basically. It certainly isn't good optics anyway at the least
120
Laura Webster @lauraewebster.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Nothing wrong with healthy debate on the topic! But media attempts to portray this policy as inherently antisemitic are deliberately ignoring the many many Jewish voices in favour of it. I don't think that helps anyone.

I'm not a Green member and I'm not Jewish, so disregard this based on that if you want, but most of the people I spoke to this weekend at English Green conf who backed the Zionism is racism motion were Jewish. One served in the IDF, another was a child Holocaust survivor

12 years ago there was nothing like The National. Now there is a pro-independence paper that cares deeply about issues of equality and fairness, and tries to show the world what Scotland is really about - not the doom-laden versions that have dominated the media for decades

Laura Webster @lauraewebster.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
How we present ourselves to the rest of the world is really important when it comes to the journey to independence. It's a real privilege that people who want to know more are coming to The National, and it makes me think a lot about our role
130
Laura Webster @lauraewebster.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Helping people outside of Scotland understand our politics is not the primary goal of the paper - we're a Scottish paper that serves the people of Scotland - but it's really interesting to see we are having that impact south of the Border and elsewhere.
