⚠️ Venezuela’s civil society is under threat. A harsh new NGO law and a U.S. funding freeze are squeezing the lifelines of independent civil society groups. Without urgent action, critical voices could be silenced. Read WOLA’s latest analysis on what’s at stake: 🔗 www.wola.org/analysis/ven...

9/ Bottom line: The U.S. must craft policies that hold Maduro accountable while protecting Venezuelans—not just make transactional moves. A smarter strategy is needed. 🎯

8/ So what should U.S. policy do? Focus on supporting efforts for a democratic transition through: 🔹 Targeted sanctions with democratic allies 🔹 Transparency in oil/gas & humanitarian safeguards 🔹 Law enforcement against corrupt actors fueling repression and human rights violations

7/ Venezuela is the world’s 3rd most corrupt country (after Somalia and South Sudan). With new authoritarian laws like the Bolívar Law, Maduro’s regime is using sectoral sanctions as an excuse to crack down on civil society.

6/ These licenses undeniably fueled Venezuela’s GDP growth in 2023-24. But here’s the contradiction: the complex humanitarian emergency continues, there is corruption and an authoritarian government that stole a presidential election.

5/ Why does this matter? Chevron exports ~240K barrels/day from Venezuela—over 25% of its oil output. If PDVSA takes over those exports, U.S. refiners can’t buy that oil due to sanctions.

6/ Those conditions not only remain, but have worsened. This is supported by reports from the IACHR and UN HRC. Those conditions justified the DHS's decision to grant an extention of 18 months. People have reasonable fear of political persecution if turned back.

DHS formalized the revocation of TPS (designated originally until April) for 300,000 Venezuelans. They will lose their status after 60 days of the official notice. For now, people with TPS until September are not affected.

This is a soul-crushing news. The TPS was based “on the severe humanitarian emergency the country continues to face due to political and economic crises under the inhumane Maduro regime”. People cannot go back there safely. Moreover, TPS for Venezuelans had bipartisan support.
