Species intraspecific variation drives tropical forest drought resistance - Nature
Substantial intraspecific variation, together with species turnover, drives coordinated shifts in drought resistance such as increased embolism resistance and wider stomatal safety margins in drier fo...

New paper! My current favourite: "Water Limits Radial Tree Growth More Than Light in an Everwet Subtropical Forest" -> with 3500 mm of rain and no distinct dry season, trees in Puerto Rico still grew more under wet conditions. @globalchangebio.bsky.social onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

What drives tree growth after a hurricane? 🌀🌳 Hot off the press in @pnas.org today! We tracked 1,082 trees in Puerto Rico and found that pre-disturbance growth outperformed crown biomass loss and competitive release as a predictor of post-storm growth. The paper: www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

Thrilled to share our new paper on restoring tree diversity in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest!🌳 Our findings are encouraging: restoration shows high diversity, though old-growth-like composition needs more time. Amazing team effort from the Newfor team @ USP & @w-u-r.bsky.social doi.org/10.1111/gcb....

All Reforestation Methods Can Support Tropical Tree Diversity Recovery, but Drivers and Species Composition Vary
We assessed tree diversity recovery across five reforestation methods (white background) and compared them to three reference systems (grey background). In the rainforest, none of the restoration met...

New #timber #tracing paper on power of combined methods. Study led by @lauraboeschoten.bsky.social & Barbara RV Meyer-Sand for African timber shows combining methods boosts reliability of tracing. With 3 methods: 95% of samples traced back to <100 km of origin. 🌎🌐🍁 👉 www.nature.com/articles/s43...

Combined genetic and chemical methods boost the precision of tracing illegal timber in Central Africa - Communications Earth & Environment
The origin of timber was correctly identified for 94% of samples in Central Africa, a high-risk region with low tracing accuracy to date, according to an analysis that combined genetic, stable isotope...

Super excited to share our new tracing paper!! This is the result of two PhDs and many amazing collaborators. Combining genetics, stable isotopes and multi-element analysis improves tracing results.

#ATBC2025 was about (re)connecting and diving into tree growth, drought and heat! Great to see so many friends and colleagues from all over the world together in Oaxaca.

Wrapping up our US train adventure, returning to NYC from visiting friends in Grand Junction, CO. The Rockies were breathtaking! Wish the US had high-speed trains—4 nights in 10 days on a train is a bit much. Still, so worth it! With my fav travel partner. :)

1st post! Great to highlight my PD project: LUQTEE, the Luquillo Throughfall Exclusion Experiment! We study how trees cope under drought, with 3 experimental 20x20m drought plots in Puerto Rico. Point dendrometers, sapflow sensors, water potentials. And more! Pics from last week helping building.
