Somehow I hadn’t thought of AI-generated LIBRARY books. (Other than maybe plagiarists claiming they wrote something, while covertly using AI.) But this filter is for AI publishing that lacks the grace to be ashamed

“I own I am shocked by the purchase of slaves, And fear those who buy them and sell them are knaves; What I hear of their hardships, their tortures, their groans Is almost enough to draw pity from stones. I pity them greatly, but I must be mum, For how could we do without sugar and rum?” (W. Cowper)

It is not polite to photograph someone else’s child. I just want to tell you I saw a squirrel running with a crabapple the size of its head, with a toddler in hot pursuit

I’m with you on that. Traffic cameras seemed like such a good alternative to traffic cops (who clearly can’t be trusted.) The problem is that cops can’t be trusted. We can’t just offer them the ability to stalk anyone as a trade for their current ability to direct violence at any street corner

Even in larger cities with more Jews, non-Zionist synagogues tend to be small. (Mine is too small for a religious school, which is a big issue for parents.)

Because asbestos is such effective fireproofing, it became easier to outlaw it when fewer fires were starting (safer wiring, less indoor smoking.) AI doesn’t solve that kind of obvious deadly problem

If he loses, it won’t be regarded as a referendum on Medicare for All. It will be Israel. (Or yet another illustration of how hard it is for a scrappy band of individuals to overcome Big Money.)

Nixon was pardoned by a fellow Republican. I suppose they might have impeached and convicted Trump in time for Pence to pardon him, but the 2- week timeline makes it an especially wild fantasy.

That’s not possible. Going faster does not only increase stopping distance. It also means the car does lots more damage when it hits.

My dad used to say “fondant” for frosting made without confectioners’ sugar (usually simple syrup, but occasionally maple.) But the recipe you linked uses “icing sugar,” which I think is the same as our confectioners? So, 3 possible definitions

Back then we called it “consciousness raising” rather than “woke.” And I remember talking to republican voters who insisted they weren’t sexist or homophobic, they were just fed up with “political correctness.” That runs parallel to white supremacy, of course

So many books are a mix. Anti-misogyny + pro-eugenics (or racist). Anti-war + cringingly sexist (or classist). Pro-queer but also sexist and classist. Feminist but anti-union.

There are so many different flavors of “conservative,” so it’s a really hard question even without considering if we mean “best art that is conservative” or “most conservative work that is good art.”

I think Speaker for the Dead is both more conservative and better written, though it’s a different kind of conservative. (Traditional family values saves a community from the terrible threat of a retrovirus.)

It’s not just that Card himself is conservative. The book is based on the idea that some people are just born Good, regardless of their behavior. Murdering or other evil actions may be traumatic for a good person, but do not make them less good.

Just saw an MBTA repair truck with full aggressive strobes going while it was parked in an apparently-legal spot. (Harvard and Comm Ave.) I just increased the dose on my migraine preventative, but I didn’t intend to test it this hard right away.

Oh, Elissa. Did you forget about Balbar Singh Sodhi? Or did you never hear his blood crying out from the Arizona ground? He was the first American victim of murderous hate crimes inspired by 9/11. He died on 9/15/2001, as the “shared bond” you imagine inspired his killer.

According to the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, no nation shall claim sovereignty over the Moon or any other celestial bodies. Breaking this treaty may be trivial compared to the Geneva Conventions, but it’s still bad.

Just spotted a cat on someone's porch, miaowing to be let in. Without thinking, I walked up to the door, rang the bell, nodded to the cat and left. It was only I rounded the corner I realised what I'd done as I heard the owner shouting FUCK ME SARAH THE CAT JUST RANG THE DOORBELL

At the universities I know of, the term “core curriculum” refers to less than 10% of classes, and students spend most of their time on what you call “electives.” As a chemistry major, none of my chemistry classes were in the core curriculum. None. UH is still making horrifying changes!

She was on the side of the angels in some of the culture wars, but not all. I’m glad she finally changed her “Dixie Stampede” in 2018, but the decades-long celebration of the Confederacy troubled me a lot. She was kind and generous and a superb businesswoman…that doesn’t imply she was perfect

It’s such a lovely symbol of peace and cooperation between the US and DR. If the embassy no longer shares those values, makes sense to take down the picture. Maybe it should go to NYC (MoMA or Gracie Mansion)
