I would look at some sort of migration pattern? Stamping each save with a version number and then using that and a switch to slowly edit old saves into new saves. Factorio has similar tech iirc for managing save versions.

I believe there are two ways they're oriented, the sonic way but with the /| so that the sharp | slices down and away from the face, or its a... 8 kinda shape going nnn along the blade so it doesn't matter as much. It's like a handheld band or regular saw... but made of a chain.
