This week I have been learning that command strips were not designed to be in the same place for five years

justifying not immediately giving clear rules to every bit of magic in one series I'm writing with xkcd.com/2501/ like the nerd I am because of course if the MC/narrator is an expert she's not going to spend her time explaining how magic works she's just going to do it

Exciting footnote to come across in *The End of Everything (Astrophysically Speaking)* for people who felt called out reading *Project Hail Mary* when Grace was like "I know different things in different units. I'm American. It happens." (me) (also I am having a great time reading this book)
A screenshot of a footnote from an ebook. It reads:
X. Based on current estimates, the Sun is already increasing in radius at about an inch per year. But at the same time, the Earth is expanding its orbit, such that we're moving away from the Sun at about 15 centimeters per year (I make no apology for the mixed units here), so it's not like the surface of the Sun is getting closer to us at the moment.

For reasons unknown (my inability to do basic math), my calendar event for pizzamas was two weeks early and this is a Tragedy for me to learn because it means I'll have moved and won't be able to celebrate it with the roommate I had all through grad school

Growing up with the phrase “Wikipedia isn’t a valid source,” only to end up in a daily life where everyone says, “Just ask ChatGPT.”

first draft responses to reviewers asking why I didn't show a specific thing: because I didn't want this paper to have a MegaFigure with 100 panels

Currently begging my library to add this book to their collection (by tagging it on Libby with the "Notify Me" smart tag that goes to my library's acquisitions queue)

getting journal paper reviews back is great for the "wow I hope my paper didn't get lost in the void" feelings but not so great for the "this paper was an absolute monster to write and I never want to look at it again" feelings

In the midst of the current heat wave, my yearning for late fall is very real. Still doesn't mean I am okay with the Halloween stuff coming out already but oh how I long to wear a flannel shirt again

me, looking at the NHC's seven-day outlook for the tropical Atlantic, and so excited that I can pull out a variation on this meme again this year now that we're getting into peak african easterly wave season (full disclaimer: these are still waves and it'll be 5-7 days before any impacts to land)
the second breakfast meme with the text:
top: we've got one easterly wave in the main development region
bottom: but what about a second one?

for all of my "yeah I can fix it if I break it" confidence I have with physical objects, I really do worry a lot more about breaking things on computers *even though I also know how to fix a lot of those problems*

It appears that between my current Project Hail Mary fixation and the newest episode of Humans that I'm reentering a more general space fixation and thinking to myself "I should apply to the next astronaut class"

the thing about ADHD is i can know: ✅ what i need to do ✅ when i need to do it ✅ why it matters ✅ how to start and STILL sit completely frozen on the couch watching the deadline approach like a slow-motion train

I've been writing fanfic for the first time in ages (Project Hail Mary is still devouring my attention) and have had some absolutely *banger* lines, my favorite of which so far is "And then it was done. It was Friday, and the world was ending."

Margaret @lastcomment314.bsky.social · 17/07/2026
so I'm in the middle of listening to this week's episode of Humans and when Hank asks Andy Weir if he's ever played any of the Civilization games, that question felt very "is the Pope Catholic?"

terrible new sentence I just uttered: I need to shower now so that I stop smelling like leaky potato (for context, my roommate and I were checking if the potatoes were still good and, uh, they were not)

Margaret @lastcomment314.bsky.social · 06/07/2026
i spent the whole day waiting for my apartment's maintenance to come do something about the leak in our ceiling only to log into my apartment's resident portal and find that the maintenance request was marked completed at some unknown time earlier today with no notes and no timestamp

it's truly a wild time in my brain right now with the World Cup, Project Hail Mary, and the ongoing Catholic Church schism drama competing for my attention

me watching project hail mary a few weeks ago: wow I feel really seen by this character and this movie me reading project hail mary right now: why am I so aggressively seen by this book and this character

So @nfdiscordserver.dftba.social has a collaborative video project in July and I'm cooking up some ideas along these lines

Margaret @lastcomment314.bsky.social · 27/06/2026
my desire to write a science-y thread about tropical waves (my dissertation topic) and Cabo Verde (of World Cup relevance) is in conflict with my brain not fully functioning before noon and the fact that I already have plans in brickspace for this afternoon
020
Margaret @lastcomment314.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
I don't know if it's just the ADHD speaking but I really wish that I had over-the-air TV options for watching both final games for each world cup group instead of being stuck with whichever one the TV networks think will be more popular
020
Margaret @lastcomment314.bsky.social · 23/06/2026
I understand very little Spanish but watching the world cup on telemundo was absolutely the correct choice because it's just incredible hearing the commentators go 'gooooooooool' so excitedly no matter who's playing and it's getting me invested in matches I have only a passing interest in

dear rewards programs just because I didn't spend my birthday reward the day you sent it to me does not mean I need fifteen more reminder emails about it clogging up my inbox

somehow I've become so engrossed with the world cup that I didn't even notice that the first tropical storm of the atlantic hurricane season already formed

Margaret @lastcomment314.bsky.social · 18/06/2026
so I've been on a quest to listen to all DH&J and SciShow Tangents in order, and right now I'm in 2020, and, in some incredible timing, reached the "Games" episode of Tangents where Hank did a soccer-inspired All Star parody (and other soccer factoids) which is incredible timing with the World Cup

I've caught a few in-text citation errors when reviewing because I was familiar with those papers, and I always put in my review "please check all other references for accuracy" because while I'm not going to review every reference, I sure want the authors to do so

the most disappointing part of getting my PhD is I can no longer use the "I'm not Dr [lastname] that's my dad" joke when random unknown scientific journals cold email me trying to get me to write articles for them (I haven't actually ever replied to those emails that way I just think it to myself)

So I accidentally read all of Empire of Storms in four days and I may have written one of my favorite sentences in my review, wherein I say "I consider myself something of a connoisseur of cliffhangers" because I've read and written my fair share of them but that whole book is a masterclass in them

It would be my luck that we would get thunderstorms that disrupt our power the day after my dissertation defense, and that somehow a circuit would trip in my room but not the rest of the apartment

As a scientist in the weather and climate field: - Good AI: a machine learning model that is built specifically to do better data assimilation so that we have better initial conditions for weather models so that we have more accurate forecasts - Bad AI: the water-guzzling plagiarism machine

the reasons I dislike my apartment's dishwasher's rack design are numerous, but chief among them is that it has lost the lids for my smallest rubbermaids multiple times, destroying them in the process
