A little letter about Layla that I wrote up a couple weeks ago as we were wrapping. A more serious and genuine tone about the whole thing. Anyway, its whats been the motor inside of me to complete this project... 💖

In 2023 when Layla: The Little Undead Girl got put on ice due to the merger over at Cartoon Network, I resigned myself to not touching it again for many years.

I thought maybe I’d throw the board up and that would be it but I wanted to give it a bit more care since it was just a beat board. Then an editor friend reached out to work together, we talked about several other projects and we said we’d do this one day. This was back in 2023.

Then a lot of things got in the way, work… life… hell on earth and i kept pushing it out further and further but things kept getting in the way. Eventually I said, eventually.

Then my dad died.

One thing that kept being said to me over and over at his funeral was “he really would’ve loved to have made it to see your graphic novel done.”

I could feel the ache of disappointment in me. I hadn’t finished it yet. I had been struggling to balance my book with the pressures of work and other struggles.

And then my mom started not doing well.

My mom has a piece of my old Layla artwork hanging up in my childhood home. She had it there and then got it printed onto a t-shirt. Embarrassed the hell out of me. I used to be mortified that she wore my old art work day in and day out. Art that I had since outgrown.

But she always said she loved the characters. And I never outgrew the characters.

And so I made a promise. I made a promise I wouldn’t wait to get Layla out there based on if a studio was ever ready for it.

So I reached back out to that editor friend and, inspired by working with him, reached out to several amazing voice actors. And from there, it grew and grew, and we wanted to make it better and better.

At a point I knew we were ready to just put it out there. Sure with imperfections, scratchy drawings, etc.

This year for me, and what I’ve been reconciling is… I don’t know what will happen tomorrow, and I’m petrified every day, but I can’t keep waiting for studios to give me permission to tell the stories I’ve been holding in my heart for years. The book is still taking me too long, and it’s coming out too late (even though yes, it’s still coming)

But Layla now… it’s out there not to say… hey. I did it mom. You didn’t have to wait. You don’t have to wait to see it before it’s too late.

Love you mom.

A few people have been guessing where all my inspirations for Layla come from and most are thinking WAY too modern. Layla for me has been around since middle school and I'm old folks! The inspos pull much more from these classics:

The eye gag was also his wonderful work as well!!

Levon is being WAY too modest, his paintings RULED!!! I couldn't' have helped sell these jokes nearly as well without his amazing artistic skills! Please bask in the epic art below by @forkfrenzy.bsky.social which I requeted to be a mix of that classic flapjack style with modern zombie flare!

Amazing painting by Levon of Layla in her most horrific state!

One thing is, I always LOVED drawing Katara. I loved drawing all the characters but I'll admit pretty flowing anime hair is kinda my jam haha.

Okay I was given the go ahead to share some boards from early enough in the #AvatarTheLastAirbender film :) For now just some early shots rather than the whole scene, at least until everyone has the opportunity to see the film :)

How about some of these scrapped thumbs haha. Sometimes I end up liking them more than my cleans. Truly I can't pick a favorite character I enjoyed drawing.

I'll be waiting for a bit before I post boards but I'll try to find margin doodles in the meantime. Here's a Katara for now.

This is all to say, my editor for the short originally approached me about collaborating on something together - if i had an animatic lying around. He just sent me these shirts and its just genuinely so sweet and humbling. That's my little girl like damn. There she is.

I feel like people here would appreciate this art dump I did for a YA project that is currently on the backburner and an inspo photo while pitching lol.

Cassidy and Tessa - their relationship is just as healthy as Jennifer's Body!! You get it...

Happy #PortfolioDay! I'm Laser/Liza - a director with experience at Marvel, Netflix, Paramount, Titmouse, etc. I did some story art for the latest Aang Avatar the Last Airbender film and I'm current polishing up my own OGN, Wayward in colors! I also have a few animation projects on the way ❤️

i'm kinda laughing bc I made a pitch a bit ago that sort of harkened back to this style. As much as I love doing anime inspired work I also love that good good old rendering (with foundations in like old fashion art)

He's voiced by the absolutely perfect and wonderful Jeff Trammell (@jefftrammell), showrunner, writer and creator of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spiderman and overall just amazing talent! Adore Jeff to the sky - it was an utmost pleasure to get to work with him. 🙏
