It happens exceedingly often even when there’s no other metafiction elements in the text, and it always feels like the author turning around and doing an over-exaggerated wink to me like, “ooh, get it?” Again, it happens enough that I don’t think it bothers most readers, but ugh, I do not enjoy it.

Part 2 of this is another banger. Lark does such a good job of juggling perspectives and voices, moving between small personal moments and sweeping socioeconomic sagas, in a way that coheres so well to tell the story of a group of underdogs losing their souls. AND the women are just wonderful...
