#295: A BAY OF BLOOD (1971) dir. Mario Bava First time seeing this classic on the big screen, courtesy of Fox Theater. Few gialli have had the sense of place this one does- the locations and art direction are perfect. Only one that comes close off the top of my head is Lamberto's BLADE IN THE DARK

#294: THE GREAT CANADIAN HORROR FILM FESTIVAL, DAY 2 - BOO BLOCK (2026) It is hard to overstate how much better the second night of this was. So many good shorts it was almost too hard to pick a favorite - almost. Shawna Edward's found-footage flick MIMICS was perfectly creepy and well executed

#293: PORTAL TO HELL (2025) dir. Woody Bess I missed this one when it played last year at the Forest City Film Festival in London, so I was stoked to see it pop up at the Revue. Funny and surprisingly sweet-natured horror comedy built around the rock solid foundation that is Keith David

#292: THE GREAT CANADIAN HORROR FILM FESTIVAL, DAY 1 - BLOOD BLOCK (2026) Tonight's block, the first of three, had a total of 12 indie shorts. Highlights include Stephen Packer's UNPROMPTED and Noah Berc's BRO. It would be mean to dish on the lowlights but believe me when I say they were LOW

#291: BACKROOMS (2026) dir. Kane Parsons Second go round for this one. While the horror didn't quite hold up on repeat viewing, the middle-aged ennui and dread still hit

#290: TONY (2026) dir. Matt Johnson I don't know much about Anthony Bourdain, so mostly I approached this as a character study. Johnson pretty effortlessly sketches out a '70s coming of age story with the help of a killer cast and photography that makes everything feel like a fond memory

#289: COLONY (2026) dir. Yeon Sang-ho Absolute monster of a zombie flick. Loved the hell out of it. Of the two Korean horror flicks currently in theaters, HOPE is getting more press but I think this is the better film

He's really great in it! Never makes Carter look like a buffoon, which he could easily have done

#288: THE STUNT DRIVER (2026) dir. Michael Dowse After reading mostly middling reviews out of TIFF, I didn't anticipate loving this as much as I did. Like RIVALS OF AMZIAH KING, it reached into some deep part of my psyche and drew out major feelings. See it, see it, see it

#287: RUNNER (2026) dir. Scott Waugh Reacher punches his way through Brisbane and I'm 100% onboard. Thinking we got an unrated cut here in Canada because this thing - rated PG-13 down south - is chockablock with way too many F-bombs and bloody headshots to qualify for that rating

#286: WELCOME II THE TERRORDOME (1995) dir. Ngozi Onwurah Deep cut from the UK long teetering on the edge of becoming a "lost" film, now restored by Criterion and Janus Films. The spirits of the Igbo Landing dead struggle to survive in a dystopian AfroFuturist urban afterlife. Just as relevant now

#285: THE HOOTERS MURDERS - DEADLY SHIFT (2026) Essentially an overlong episode of FORENSIC FILES. Spoiler-guys who frequent Hooters suck, although not as much as the Hooters Corporation. One day I'd like to think we'll have a reckoning for the insanity that happens in the name of customer service

#284: ITS NAME WAS MORMO (2024) dir. Mark Andrew Bowers Found footage 101. Starts strong then nosedives straight into the genre's worst tropes - husband refuses to believe despite overwhelming evidence, drawn-out security footage where nothing happens, characters whispering followed by loud noises

#283: THE RIVALS OF AMZIAH KING (2026) dir. Andrew Patterson I've thought about this movie every few days since first seeing it in theaters. It is a classic in the making. Just a lovely, sweet, kind film with a real dark streak and an incredible soundtrack. It's on PVOD - check it out

#282: THE PREDATOR (2018) dir. Shane Black Look, this is a bad movie. Straight up. And yet I've seen it at least five times, not counting the times I've seen bits and pieces. It's just...watchable

#281: ROGUE TROOPER (2026) dir. Duncan Jones The only full-on dud I saw @ TIFF. I feel like a heel saying that because Duncan Jones was there to present it and seemed like a good dude. To its credit, it has imaginative visuals and some solid British humor. Unfortunately, it's also narratively inert

#280: HOPE (2026) dir. Na Hong-Jin I'm a little cooler on this one than a lot of folks. Manages to pull off fun and scary with equal success, I just wished it didn't take almost 3 hours to tell half a story

#279: THE WEIGHT (2026) dir. Padraic McKinley If I hadn't seen this way down at the bottom of the Cineplex listings I wouldn't even know it existed and that'd be a shame. An old-school hardboiled crime thriller with Ethan Hawke proving yet again that he's one of the best actors working today

#278: RESIDENT EVIL (2026) dir. Zach Cregger The horror movie as amusement park ride. Overall, I dug this a lot, including the comic beats. The only exception was the Paul Walter Hauser sequence because as much as I like that guy, it felt spliced in from a completely different film

#277: THE UPRISING (2026) dir. Paul Greengrass My first Greengrass flick since JASON BOURNE rises and falls on Andrew Garfield's performance. He is so, so good. Otherwise it's a totally fine historical epic. Argument could be made about how well the whole handheld thing works in a period context

#276: KICK ON (2026) dir. Nick Kozakis Australia's answer to GREEN ROOM. Relatively tight single location thriller with some absolutely wild practical effects. Spoiler: body parts will, essentially, be pulped

#275: THE LAST PHOTOGRAPH (2016) dir. Zack Snyder I'm in the minority but I kind of loved this. A brutal revenge story with a melodramatic streak a mile wide. Imagine 80s J. Lee Thompson & Charles Bronson making THE SEARCHERS by way of YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE on location in rural Colombia

#274: PRACTICAL MAGIC 2 (2026) dir. Susanne Bier Lord have mercy this sucked. Sandra Bullock acts like she's doing the whole film at gunpoint. While I didn't love the first film, I'd watch it again a dozen times before I sat through this again once. Not a shred of charm or originality

#273: BELOW (2026) Josh Hartnett's skin is glowing way too much for him to be a crumbling, hard-bitten Newfie sailor and father of four but there's enough sea monster tease for me to keep watching. First 2 episodes screened as part of TIFF

Caught a cab home after the show because I couldn't get a Lyft and when the driver found out I write horror stories, he very helpfully suggested I should write one about a guy with three dicks who fucks a woman so hard she explodes. So there's that

#272: SUPERGIRL (2026) dir. Craig Gillespie Wanted to rewatch this after a friend lent me the graphic novel it's adapted from. Actually liked it less the second time around and wished they'd pulled more from the source material, which is very good. Milly Alcock is still the highlight of the thing

I've now had 5 short stories get picked up! My 90s NASCAR-themed bad seed story "Rockingham" was accepted by the South Carolina Writers Association for their Halloween issue and "Beryl", about a family road trip gone sideways, will be in an anthology centered around the theme of distortions in time

#271: THE DEVILS (1971) dir. Ken Russell Absolutely mad. Oliver Reed is magnetic. Appreciated it even more after watching the full 3 hr recut of CALIGULA and seeing the wrong way to do it My first ever TIFF film and North American premiere of the new 4K director's cut

#269: HOLLOW MAN 2 (2006) dir. Claudio Fäh DTV follow-up to Verhoeven's 1999 original. Has 5% of that film's substance but also 90% less of its whole gross psychosexual thing, so even stevens. Surprisingly watchable

#267: X-FILES - I WANT TO BELIEVE (2008) dir. Chris Carter Got about halfway through this before I realized I wasn't watching the new VRACH FRANKENSHTEYN cut. Switched over and found I actually liked this one more. Sure, its "just" one long bottle episode, but it's great, so who cares?

Thanks man! You're definitely not alone. Those fuckers are in their endgame, plowing ahead with those centers to keep the bullshit machines running and they assume we can't measurably push back because they've got gov't in their pockets. They assume democracy is on its way out

#263: FALL 2 - DEADPOINT (2026) dir. The Spierig Brothers More emotionally satisfying than the first FALL, tho that one had the advantage of a simpler premise. This one gets unwieldy toward the end. Always nice to see something new from the Spierig Brothers

#256: MORTAL KOMBAT II (2026) dir. Simon McQuoid Rewatch at home was a great reminder as to why I fell asleep in theatre. Josh Lawson walks away with the film as Kano, and his bantering w Karl Urban's Johnny Cage give you a sense of what this film could have been if it wasn't so damn self serious
