“*Yàlla, protège-moi.*” Oana stood between the room panels; the numbers above her head seemed like they were about to burst: 122,994ms. Her words sounded like a prayer or a very quiet spell.

She had one hand lifted toward the gate. Her fingers trembled, “*Nha Deus,*” she whispered, “*mon corps est à moi.*”

She moved in careful steps, but her numbers did rather dangerously: 182,528ms

Luz reached her halfway across the room, just as her knees gave. He caught her under the arms, but Oana did not stop. Her hand stayed lifted toward the gate.

*“Mon cœur est à toi.”*

The blood on the metal stopped dripping, and the flow reversed. The V’s and L’s straightened. The little T’s cleaned themselves until the whole circle looked clear and clean.

“*Mes peurs ne sont pas un mariage*,” Oana whispered. “*Ne me laisse pas seule avec leurs anneaux.*”

Her fingers touched the gate. The circle turned. The runes caught light one after another, the same cold glow from the plane door, spinning under Oana’s palm while the metal shook with another hit from outside.

The world has been under attack since the dawn of time by creatures so ancient and vast that human language has never found a word adequate enough to describe them beyond Old-Ones.

Fortunately, humanity’s greatest magical bloodlines have been handling the situation quietly for centuries, and everything is largely under control on another copy of Earth.

Love Bellthorn cannot see why any of this concerns her.

She has no magic. She is, by every measurable standard, completely boring. Her brother was the one summoned by the Order to go There and deal with it.

Love had plans. Little ones like, finish, or not finish, her degree. Maybe get a car, a better boyfriend than the last one.

Then a car fell out of the sky and crushed her brother beside her.

The Order would like to express its condolences. The Order would also like to remind Love that the paperwork had already been filed, the plane is waiting, and six strangers from across the world will join her on board.

She has one bag with non-magical items, as if she had any to start with. She has absolutely no business being here. But something is wrong with Love Bellthorn.

And by the time anyone notices, it is already too late.

**Marrakech, two days before the plane.**

The wedding festivities were still ongoing.

Food covered the tables. Laughter rose with the loud music, feet striking the floor in time with it. Colourful fabric with lavish threads of gold and silver covered the room. Wine passed from hand to hand, a secret sin everyone pretended not to see, not to care about, only to drink.

Oana walked through all of it bare of fabric, bare of shame, bare of the girl they had dressed for the higher price.

Her mouth was warm with iron. It coated her tongue and ran between her teeth. Such a grotesque flavour, and yet it made her feel grandiose, powerful, reckless.

She had finally tasted the nectar of the gods.

In the middle of the room, Oana chewed her husband’s heart.

It took them a little too long to notice. Too long for the music to die. Too long for the laughter to rot in their mouths with the taste of burning wine.

Then someone screamed her name, her mother.

“Oana!”

She smiled.

Oana did not need this world anymore. She could leave it and walk into the next. Free of promises. Free of bargains. She would no longer beg from spirits hiding in the corners of her mind.

She knew now what she was: a goddess.

She was one of them, as she should have been from the beginning.

The spirits had kept their promise.

She had become an Old-One, and she would die as one.

The beach stretched around him with slow waves that washed over his bare feet and pulled back again. Everything was calm, so calm. The sea moved like a lullaby, and the air smelled of iodine and midsummer.

Sowol turned around. “Luz?”

He couldn't find him.

Instead, he saw an Old-One standing a few steps away, shaped almost like a man but failing halfway. It was made of stone, with moss crawling over its shoulders and down one arm. He was not much larger than a normal human being, but everything human had been scraped out and replaced with earth.

Sowol tightened his grip on the sword and waited for the attack.

“So,” the Old-One said, “do you see anything? Any string or whatever we can follow?”

Sowol’s grip loosened. “Luz?”

“Yeah.” The moss-covered thing tilted its head. “Who do you think I am? Santa?”

Sowol looked him over again, then looked down at himself too fast.

“How…” His voice came out smaller than he wanted. “How do you see me?”

Luz stared at him.

“What question are you asking me? You look like you. You and that stupid onesie.” He laughed. “You know you are old enough to wear normal pyjamas like everyone else.”

Sowol looked at his arms, just to be sure.

“We just need some tea,” Luz said, with a small shrug. “And I can make tea. I’m good at making tea. And I know how to use it.”

“Tea?” Sowol repeated. “You want tea? Now?”

Lila rubbed her forehead. “He is talking about ayahuasca. It is a drug. It helps you reach a higher state.”

She turned to Luz.

“How do you know where she is?”

“If Sowol is linked to her,” Luz said, “he will guide me to her. Isn’t it how the strings work?”

“How do I know she is safe while I’m gone?”

“We are trying to help her,” Charlie said. “We are not the enemy.”

Sowol snapped his eyes back to him. “You were talking about turning her body into fuel!”

Charlie stood.

“Boy,” he said, “I guarantee you nothing will happen to her. You have my word, and I only have one.”

“What are we going to do?” Sowol asked. “How will we heal her?”

“Sowol, boy, there is no more healing…we will ask her what she wishes for,” Charlie said. “We give her dignity. And perhaps you’ll have the chance to say goodbye. Say all the things you didn’t have a chance to tell her yet.”

“I know,” Sowol said. “It’s okay. Try to sleep.”

Love had not realised Sowol was in there with her. Of course, he was probably checking on her, caring for her.

“I don’t want to die,” Oana whispered.

“You are not going to die tonight.”

*Tonight*? Love stared at the panel. *Who says something like that?*

He was worse than she was with social cues. He could have said *You’re not going to die*. Periode.

“I’m scared.”

“Yeah,” Sowol said. His voice was lower now. “Me too. Everyone is.”

Silence settled between them after that. Maybe they had fallen asleep.

Love turned on her side and closed her eyes when she was almost falling asleep. She heard Oana saying: I like you.”

This one was worse.

Love kept her eyes closed, waiting for Sowol to say the inevitable, and he said, “I know.”

Love opened her eyes; *what the fuck? She* could hear the stupid drumming in her own chest between relief and rage.

*I know.*

What was that supposed to mean?

She turned onto her other side. She did not care. She wouldn't let herself care. It was none of her business. Oana could like whoever she wanted, and Sowol could answer whoever he wanted, however he wanted.

*I know—*It was such a cruel answer.

Luz stood up; took the first empty jerrycan from her and then the second. His arm dropped with it. The container hit the floor with a heavy plastic thud.

Luz stared down at it. “What is this?”

“A container?” Love answered.

He crouched, unscrewed the lid, sniffed and went very still. “Guys,” he said. “This is fuel.”

Luz smelled it again, just to be sure. “This is more than enough to reach Linden.”

Oana’s blanket slid lower on her shoulders. She turned to Sowol. “Didn’t you say you checked?”

Sowol looked at Love. For half a second, his face gave nothing away. Then he smiled as if he had been caught. “I must have missed it.”

“You said you looked twice,” Oana said.

“I missed it.” Sowol pulled the panda hood lower over his head. “I’m tired, okay? I’m sorry.”

Love met his eyes. She didn’t know why she suddenly felt guilty. She didn’t know why it felt like she had done something wrong, or why Sowol had just helped her.

So she did what she always did. She pushed it away, pretending nothing really happened.

“So,” Love said, looking anywhere except at him. “Are we going now, or after breakfast?”
