Historical analysis of pornography regulation has identified issues in regulation: the definition problem and the prohibition problem. The definition problem relates to code words, and the prohibition problem concerns alternative markets that bypass regulations. The third issue is freedom of speech.

The patch strategy has a side effect. The unpatched game can be suitable for all, so it may avoid age verification. If porn content moves to places without age checks, groups who could not access it before may reach it. Censorship might not protect children from porn. (6/6) #AgeVerification

Strategy 3: Code words. Offending content is obscured by changing words. In incest content, for example, “landlady” can mean mother and “roommate” can mean sister. (5/6) #Moderation #DigitalCulture

What Makes a Porn Game Popular on Steam? Players Tell Us
Adult games are a big part of the gaming world, yet researchers know surprisingly little about which ones people actually like and why. This study looks at pornographic games sold on Steam, the largest PC game store, to find out which ones are most popular and what players value in them. To do this, we examined the number of reviews and the review scores games received, which are closely linked to how well a game sells. We also used the tags and genre labels that fans use on the community site f95zone to describe adult games. Then we used a computational method that finds recurring themes in large amounts of text to analyse thousands of player reviews and genre descriptions. We found that most of the popular games follow a familiar formula. They are built around male players' viewpoints and show conventional, mainstream forms of sex. But this is not the whole picture. A smaller group of successful games centres on taboo or boundary-pushing content, such as monster sex, showing that there is also an audience for material that breaks with the norm. In both cases, the sexual content does not stand alone. Successful adult games borrow heavily from the habits of mainstream games, especially story-driven types like visual novels and role-playing games. Players seem to want characters, plots and gameplay, as well as erotic scenes. In short, a good pornographic game is often judged as a good game first, and as erotic content second.

How do adult game developers deal with changing rules, and what is ok to publish?
Online platforms have been cracking down on adult content, pushed by payment companies and anti-pornography groups. This has forced game developers who make adult games to change how they work. Adult games are a good example of how platform rules affect both what games look like and how they are sold and distributed. This paper looks at how developers of pornographic games responded when platforms introduced new content restrictions. By comparing different versions of the same games over time, the study identifies three ways developers adapted: (1) changing the game content itself to meet platform rules, (2) moving explicit content outside the platform through unofficial or semi-official add-on patches, and (3) using substitute words or coded language that players understand but that avoids triggering content filters. The findings suggest that developers and players have developed shared informal knowledge about how platform systems work, and use that knowledge to get around restrictions. Rather than simply following the rules, developers find ways to keep their content accessible. Platform censorship does not just block content: it changes how adult games are designed, how themes are presented, and how content is split across different platforms and distribution channels.
