Reposted by Matthew ButcherNY Times Pitchbot @nytpitchbot.bsky.social · 09/10/2026This is why mathematics is culturally superior to the rest of STEM. A grad student brings up The 400 Blows to describe the current state of math. In any other STEM area, I guarantee it would be Star Wars or maybe the Odyssey. 936423
Matthew Butcher @lanius.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Looking at their list of authors, and man. Raised eyebrow, raised eyebrow, Philippe Petit, raised eyebrow, raised eyebrow, raised eyebrow, raised eyebrow. 010
Matthew Butcher @lanius.bsky.social · 01/10/2026This looks like an even less faithful adaptation than the one with Peter Coyote 020
Matthew Butcher @lanius.bsky.social · 30/09/2026Posts mostly about Canadian politics, so I'm guessing not British. 100
Matthew Butcher @lanius.bsky.social · 27/09/2026And yet "Never Mind the State-Sponsored Doping, Here's the Sex Pistols" doesn't have quite the same magic to it. 091
Matthew Butcher @lanius.bsky.social · 27/09/2026It does say "there are no races, only species," but that might not refer to humans, and if it does it's probably a reference to Homo neanderthalensis, etc. 010
Matthew Butcher @lanius.bsky.social · 27/09/2026Whatever his thoughts on AI, I doubt he'd have bothered with it back in the era of, e.g., the sludgy opening titles for Secret Invasion. No idea what's so horrible about the premise; we've had Star Wars characters returning after death since 1977. 000
Matthew Butcher @lanius.bsky.social · 27/09/2026It's saying that "race" is a construct with no biological validity. Probably innocuous, though it looks like the original post is gone, so I can't see the context. 130
Matthew Butcher @lanius.bsky.social · 27/09/2026Not at all obvious to me that the claim is farcically stupid in the British case. 140
Matthew Butcher @lanius.bsky.social · 27/09/2026This guy is British, and he was talking about the Tories and Labour, not the Democrats. 000
Matthew Butcher @lanius.bsky.social · 27/09/2026This is a British guy talking about British parties, *not the Democrats*. Jesus Christ. 160

Matthew Butcher @lanius.bsky.social · 18/09/2026But this argument kicked off with a Canadian journalist writing for a Canadian audience using "mandate" in its traditional sense, not this American redefinition of the word. 051
Matthew Butcher @lanius.bsky.social · 18/09/2026Ahead 49% to 47% the week before he dropped out, and presumably his numbers would have gone down from there. 000
Matthew Butcher @lanius.bsky.social · 16/09/2026Yeah, ditto here, right after writing me a long reply. Guess the argument wasn't going the way he'd hoped. 010
Matthew Butcher @lanius.bsky.social · 16/09/2026Sometimes yes, sometimes no. But you started things off by claiming that it was "extremely safe" to assume that nobody's ever pointing out genuine antisemitism, and that's absolute fucking nonsense. 020
Matthew Butcher @lanius.bsky.social · 16/09/2026The part where nobody in the thread is defending what you claim they're defending? Yeah, I'd say you got that part wrong. 230
Matthew Butcher @lanius.bsky.social · 16/09/2026Buddy, you've got some of the worst reading comprehension I've ever seen in my life. 000
Matthew Butcher @lanius.bsky.social · 16/09/2026The hell are you talking about? People constantly point out that, e.g., Elon Musk is an antisemite, those people are absolutely right, and that's nothing to do with Israel. 150
Matthew Butcher @lanius.bsky.social · 12/09/2026"Less" has been used with count nouns since the ninth century, so if there's any pattern it certainly wasn't a firm rule. 120
Matthew Butcher @lanius.bsky.social · 11/09/2026Tilly Norwood PR team working even harder than I'd thought 010
Matthew Butcher @lanius.bsky.social · 07/09/2026Oh I'm sure 80% of it is trolling. Not very effective trolling, given that the target probably won't even see it, but it's something trolls can do even from behind a block. 010
Matthew Butcher @lanius.bsky.social · 07/09/2026I have no idea what that Edward Said list is about. Presumably Palestine-related but that doesn't explain why I'm on it. 110
Matthew Butcher @lanius.bsky.social · 07/09/2026A couple of lists with defamatory names that used to be there are gone now, so Bluesky does take action occasionally. Though they weren't much worse than what's still there. If someone is actually using slurs, you might try going to their profile and reporting them for abusive lists. Couldn't hurt. 110
Matthew Butcher @lanius.bsky.social · 07/09/2026Can't say I see the appeal of making these lists; in the vast majority of cases nobody's going to see them but the creator. 210
Matthew Butcher @lanius.bsky.social · 07/09/2026I've somehow avoided the lists with slurs in their names so far. Though there was one guy who added me to about a dozen lists with increasingly histrionic titles — I think because I criticised Platner? — not sure; never even interacted with the guy's account. Anyhow, these were my favourites. 110
Matthew Butcher @lanius.bsky.social · 07/09/2026Oh yeah, this mngsnen character is an idiot, no question. 040
Matthew Butcher @lanius.bsky.social · 07/09/2026LDP, maybe? "Jimintō?" "NO." Well, that exhausted the party names I knew in Japanese. But I had another thought, and hummed the opening bars of "The Internationale." "Yes," she said, triumphantly. 020
Matthew Butcher @lanius.bsky.social · 07/09/2026Granted that this was a very special case, but: Years ago in Nagoya I was talking with a girl at a barbecue. My Japanese was bad and her English wasn't much better, but she managed to convey that she was interested in politics. Did she like the DPJ? "Minshutō?" I asked. "No." 120
Matthew Butcher @lanius.bsky.social · 07/09/2026"Kimono" has mostly narrowed in meaning these days to wafuku, traditionally styled robes, and yukata do still qualify there. 160
Matthew Butcher @lanius.bsky.social · 05/09/2026The "-ard" is an old pejorative intensifier, as in "bastard," "coward," "dullard," "drunkard," etc. The "dot-" is from "dotage" — a dotard is a senile person. 1161
Matthew Butcher @lanius.bsky.social · 05/09/2026Are you talking about "dotard"? That word is unconnected to the r-slur. 1100
Matthew Butcher @lanius.bsky.social · 05/09/2026Yep. I learned this at a very young age from the Hardy Boys. 000
Matthew Butcher @lanius.bsky.social · 04/09/2026I mean, yes, I will say that. TERROR TRAIN is the same cinematographer as BARRY LYNDON! 120
Matthew Butcher @lanius.bsky.social · 04/09/2026It said my dialect sounded Hawaiian, and I think that's almost entirely because I said rain during sunshine was a "fox's wedding" (a term I picked up in Japan, as seen in Kurosawa's DREAMS). 010
Matthew Butcher @lanius.bsky.social · 02/09/2026Australia and the U.S. don't, but Canada does (along with French). 020
Matthew Butcher @lanius.bsky.social · 02/09/2026Haven't looked either, but I'd guess it's partly trans issues and partly the weird belief among right-wing Americans that we're performing mass-scale euthanasia. 130
