The one in the bathroom and the one in the dining room worked in the house I grew up in. There was a similar display of wobbly stars!

That's shocking. I dread to think which subjects were deemed more 'relevant': probably better not to ask, for the sake of one's sanity...

No, it says 'owt', i.e. 'out': the finding out of treasure. They had a lot of fun writing W in those days.

My standard school report was "Could do better if she tried". What always puzzled me was how on earth they were so certain...

If I'd looked more closely at this business card before Mr Young finished repairing my clock this morning, I'd have lent him my copy of Seb Falk's "The Light Ages" so he could read about his medieval kindred spirit!
Image of an intricate and beautiful modern clock made by Eric Young of Cupar in Fife. The works can be seen, and the clock shows the phase of the moon, day, and date, and the time according to GMT and many other world time zones.

She looks uncannily like the (sadly deceased) actress Rosalie Crutchley.

Tanya Bentham sells a laid and couched work embroidery kit based on this picture, which she calls 'Chateau Chatte'.

We usually make a few pounds of bramble jelly, but today we just picked and ate.

Similar pleasure from brambles today in Scotland. Yum.
View of ripening brambles growing against a stone wall, with ripe grain in a field behind.

Gale Owen-Crocker, Elizabeth Coatsworth & Matia Hayward, 'Encyclopedia of Medieval Dress and Textiles of the British Isles' (Leiden, 2022), p. 152, confirms 'cotton wool' as "raw cotton; or it could mean cloth made of cotton. Confusingly, it could also be used of a wool cloth with a cottony nap".

My rough collie was once chased down the beach by two chihuahuas. She was utterly terrified, but it gave a lot of people a very good laugh before I caught up with her to rescue her!

It doesn't look as if it is in its original binding, though, so the modern looking endpaper is probably 19th or 20th century, not 16th.

He fell off the cliffs at Kinghorn. Falling off cliffs isn't a great idea, eels or no eels (though eelsily done when things get slippy)!

Postcards I bought but liked too much to send. Cards people sent me I liked so much I kept them. I have a drawer full of things like this (and actual, genuine, real bookmarks) and still end up marking my place with torn up envelopes.

A friend of mine (may she be forgiven) introduced me to "God is walking his porpoise out", and when "God is working his purpose out" was one of our hymns the very next Sunday, my daughter and I proved we are not yet old enough to know better.
