My VictoriaLogs instance just hit 10 million log entries over the past 7 days. How much space is that on disk? According to du inside the jail, 426 MB: [13:37 logs dvl ~] % sudo du -ch -d 0 /var/db/victoria-logs 426M/var/db/victoria-logs 426Mtotal

This is Nginx (dev.freshports.org) dumping access logs in JSON format, with syslog-ng sending them to another host (logs.int.unixathome.org) via TLS, and dumping them into Victoria Logs. Both "hosts" are FreeBSD 15.0 jails.

Post incident, here's the #FreshPorts bump at midnight (UTC) mentioned in a recent previous post. It may not seem like much... Looking back, it seems 0000 and 1200 are favored times.

It is hard for me to believe it wasn't one actor doing all this when it ramps up and suddenly stops. These are web server requests to the production FreshPorts server.
The request ramp up from a steady 10 or so, starting at Sunday 0900 hitting 110 by Sunday 0200 when it drops sharply back to 10.

By Sunday 9:30, it's spiking back up to 70 or so.

I wish there was a way to snooze particular `pkg audit` alerts. These particular issues are going to be long-term. I don't need to be told all the time. #FreeBSD

You might well ask: why did you buy a weed sprayer when it’s below freezing?

First use of the 2x SATADOM devices. Installed & booting on a test host. UEFI boot. This Dell R730 is 40s to the splash screen and 1:18 to the login prompt. Not a contest. I'm just saying.... The plastic needed a little cutting to fit completely down. #FreeBSD 1/2

Found this 4GB IDE drive in a desktop being recycled from a relative’s home. PSU fires up but screen remains blank. I may have to resort to destruction to dispose of this. Usually I just dd over the drive. That’s enough for this use case.

Perhaps it is time to trim some of those old boot environments on this #FreeBSD 14.2 server?

What a bot swarm (for a lack of a better term) looks like. Web traffic coming into dev/test/stage freshports[.]org. robots.txt says do not index. Requests were (for the most part) each from a different IP address. Mainly on high cost URLs which cannot cache (e.g. search). 1/3

I found my use-case for power banks other than a electricity outage. Powering my laptop when I have neglected to charge it up. I suppose it is an electricity outage, just extremely localized to this outdoor area.
A sidewalk table containing an open Macbook, a cappuccino, and a charging cable going off to the right, under the table, to an unseen backpack which contain a power bank.

Today, the plaque presented to me at BSDCan 2024 was mounted on my home office wall. It is above the printer, in the corner. A calendar previously hung on this hook. Putting it next to the Passion Vs Reason poster now seems appropriate but it wasn’t planned.

The replacement Eaton 5PX2200RT UPS, ordered Sunday night, should arrive today. This is the path it may have taken overnight. Coincidentally, I noticed the UPS in my living room also needs a new battery. That arrived yesterday. I've had that UPS for 5 years.

I got my home network online with the new #freebsd gateway today. It’s not 100% but it’s ready for the work week. During a cocktail party, I’ve been making notes of things I know have to be done. I can read it. Try transcribing it. ;)
Sorry

I'm having my second cappuccino on a Friday morning. Someone just occupied the table beside me. I imagined the person looking over, seeing multiple windows scrolling text... I'm concurrently updating multiple jails on a host using csshX (same command to N ssh sessions).

This morning I worked on my existing #OpenVPN #ansible role for the new gateway. I've copied most of the configuration away from the existing server. Now It's a matter of templating & testing. #FreeBSD
