We are the official Land Use Policy Working Group of the Green Party of England & Wales. Land is a vital irreplaceable asset. It must be used with the greatest respect to preserve it for future generations. We discuss and propose policies to achieve this.

‘Planetary Health Check 2026’, released by the Potsdam Institute last week, says that huge increases in forest area desperately needed. This is especially true in UK. The Green Party has plans to increase UK forest to 30-40% of land area over 10 years from current 10-15%. Link in last post, page 69

Memory of the summer drought are fading, but the harm to our wildlife remains for the long-term. Rivers were low for many weeks, damaging river life. Climate change continues to destroy biodiversity and our natural world. The Environment Agency publishes weekly river levels as illustrated.

The pantomime of royal celebrities goes on. Meanwhile the monarch controls use of 350,000 ha of land in UK - includes 55% of our foreshore, plus the seabed out to 22 km. In Scotland management of the Crown Estate land was taken over by the government. Should we be doing this in England & Wales too?

Next year’s wildfires are predicted to be worse than this year. Labour policy on this is very weak – banning portable BBQs. The Committee for Climate Change says a comprehensive approach is needed - see comment below. Dealing with root cause of the fires – climate change – is the only real answer. 🧵

The government recently published the ’Farming Roadmap 2050’. It has weak ambition and won’t meet UK’s commitment to the international ‘30% land devoted to nature by 2030’ goal. Eg. it only aims to increase England’s tree canopy/ woodland cover by 0.33% by 2030. A lot more radical change is needed.

UK Fire Risk Map. Red = exceptionally high, orange = very high. Many Green Party land use policies would help reduce the risk e.g.rewetting peatlands + wetlands, improving soil health - then soil would hold more moisture, woodlands of mixed age + species are more resilient. Plus lowering CO2 emissns

On 30th June farmers can apply for the government's 'Sustainable Farming Incentive 126' - SFI126. The Green Party welcomes many of the initiatives in this, eg. more for small farmers. But £290m per year is not nearly enough. GP would give £4.5bn per year by 2028. www.gov.uk/government/n...

£290m for simpler, fairer, more accessible farming schemes
The new approach will spread funding more fairly, target family farms and give farmers greater certainty.

Amazing to be walking through St Pancras station last week and see ad displays and an exhibition about peatlands. The Green Party has been banging on about peatland restoration for decades! Maybe its vital role is being more widely recognised. Thanks to South West Peatland Partnership. @peatland

The Climate Change Committee report "A Well Adapted UK" mentions repeatedly the need for peatlands to be rewetted. For flood management, carbon storage, fire prevention and habitat resilience. Only the Green Party has a policy to rewet all peatlands in UK. @climatechange

The Climate Change Committee report "A Well Adapted UK", on adapting to climate change, released May 2026, says if we have 2°C warming by 2050, high quality farmland is expected to reduce from 38% to 11%. This table is from the report's 'Land' section.🧵

The Green Party has a policy to increase the % area covered by woodland to 30-40% within 10 years, so that UK does its fair share of keeping the world within planetary boundaries. This doesn’t include parks or areas frequently walked through. UK forest cover is much less than most European countries

The government published responses to consultation on ‘Biodiversity Net Gain’ (see first comment). GP’s policy that 25% of each square kilometre must be devoted to nature cannot be met by increasing BNG off-site, as implementation of BNG allows. We agree with RSPB - the ambition of BNG is too low

The government recently updated the ‘Indicator Framework’ for flood risks, stating that over 3 million properties are at risk of flooding in England. Only the Green Party has strong policies to deal with this risk, including hugely increasing the area of permeable land which can soak up water.

The Green Party wants more equitable distribution of land ownership because in UK it is too concentrated. A Land Commission could develop policies for redistribution. In France the ‘SAFER’ system has land purchase powers to help with redistribution. Should be we have policies like this in UK? 🧵

Land Use Policy Working Group Green Party of England & Wales @landusegpew.bsky.social · 31/03/2026
UK signed up to the UN commitment that 30% of our land should be devoted to nature by 2030 (‘30by30’). The new government Land Use Framework does not confirm that commitment, weakly aiming only for some improvement by 2050. It plans to include land in the 30% that does not genuinely qualify. 🧵

Land Use Policy Working Group Green Party of England & Wales @landusegpew.bsky.social · 30/03/2026
The new government Land Use Framework doesn’t include several changes that are urgent eg. it doesn’t have an aim to cut down on the amount of meat produced. 50% of arable land is used to grow food for animals. If UK is to become self-sufficient in food production we need to produce + eat less meat.

Land Use Policy Working Group Green Party of England & Wales @landusegpew.bsky.social · 30/03/2026
The Green Party welcomes the government’s new Land Use Framework. We agree with most of it’s objectives. But their implementation plans are very weak and won’t achieve significant change. The GP has decisive and bold plans for nature protection, climate mitigation, food self-sufficiency (+ more)

The crisis re Straights of Hormuz is making us realise we rely on oil too much. The crisis is causing massive fertiliser shortage too. Fertilisers cause tremendous environmental damage. Farming systems/land use must change to use much less. This crisis should make us think about fertiliser use. 🧵

In parts of UK people don’t live within 15 minutes’ walk of a green space or nature. Green Party policy is that 25% of each square kilometre should be green space. Developers should offset, or compensate for, the value of lost green space in new developments. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

As this year’s floods recede media reports that more homes are being built in flood risk areas, showing that governments are not really thinking ahead or accepting the reality of climate change. We welcome the biggest ever clean energy auction this month which with offshore wind secures 14.7 GW of power. However solar panels should not be put on land used for growing food; nor should the Green Party's most important priority for land use be forgotten - to reverse biodiversity loss.

We need to produce less meat to address serious food security risks, says government report - our food production capability is going to decline. Half our arable land is used to grow food for animals, but could feed more people if used to grow food for humans directly.🧵 www.gov.uk/government/p...

But will this start from the premise that our uplands are the least productive areas for food, and best-suited for nature restoration? Or will it continue to prop up overgrazing & intensive farming? 1/

Green Party policies would help to lessen the effects of flooding because we would increase the area of land devoted to nature, and areas of forestry, both of which are better than urban environment or fields at absorbing water and slowing its movement. Our planning policies address flooding too. 🧵

Last month a DEFRA statement said it is "strengthening" it's commitment to biodiversity, with target of 500,000ha of wildlife rich habitat by 2042. It says it "aims" to support the UN '30:30'.This shows that DEFRA is not genuinely committed because 7m ha is needed to achieve 30:30 in UK. 🧵

The UK government is legally committed to devote 30% of land for nature by 2030, but doesn't have policies to achieve this. An empty promise. Much land designated as "improving" its biodiversity isn't improving according to the Wildlife Trusts and others so shouldn't be counted towards the target.🧵
