Today, Healy ruled out increasing the main tax on income from wealth to the same rate as taxes on income from work. This means you, the girl reading this, are going to continue paying a higher tax rate than millionaires. Tax the rich! Tax wealth! For people, planet, and public services!
Graphic announcing that Labour has ruled out fairer taxes on the richest, quoting a Financial Times headline that the chancellor rejected taxing capital gains as much as income, with arrows asking "What does this mean?" INCOME FROM WORK
IS TAXED up to 47%
Most of us get all our income from working. That’s taxed through income tax, which increases as incomes increase.
However, the rich can use their wealth to generate an income by selling assets like stocks and shares or bitcoin. They pay capital gains tax instead.
But income from wealth is taxed at a lower rate - just 24%.
The UK’s capital gains tax is the lowest in the G7, meaning people with a lot of wealth generating them a lot of income get taxed at a much lower rate
than the rest of us.
As a result, just 1 in 10 of the highest earners actually pay the highest tax rates. A quarter pay 20% or less.
Source: CenTax, Sept 2026, One in ten of the UK’s highest earners pay the full headline tax rate of 47% whilst a quarter pay less than half of that.Half of UK capital gains tax revenue comes from people earning £5M a year or more. This means you're almost certainly paying a higher tax rate than a billionaire. Why equalise capital gains tax? The Green Party thinks nurses shouldn't pay higher tax rates than millionaires and that reform could raise £19.7 billion a year to invest in people, planet and public services.

Sonia and our volunteers fought an incredible campaign that ran Labour close in one of their heartlands. Thank you so much to everyone who helped!
THANK YOU, SONIA!

Running Labour so close in the honeymoon period of a new Prime Minister is a brilliant result for the Lambeth Green Party in one of Labour’s traditionally safest wards. It confirms the emergence of the Greens as a powerful force in Lambeth’s politics: we are here to stay.

Sonia is a phenomenal candidate who ran a fantastic campaign that spoke directly to the struggles faced by the people of Myatt’s Fields. We offered a positive vision of change that voters responded to and we won’t stop working to deliver it.

Lambeth Green Party's statement on the "Zionism is Racism" motion.
Following the decision of Green Party members at our party conference to pass the ‘Zionism is Racism’ motion, we would like to address any potential concerns residents may have.

We want to be absolutely clear. This Green Party motion concerns Zionism as a political ideology.
The motion’s opposition to Zionism is consistent with the party’s commitment to equal rights, regardless of ethnicity, religious belief, or gender.

No religious or ethnic group should have privilege or special rights over all others, or the ability to dispossess and subjugate people with different religious, racial or cultural identities.
The motion has absolutely no opposition to Jewish people’s deeply felt need for security and safety, but to Zionism as a political ideology that claims the superior right of the Jewish people to historic Palestine over Palestinians.

Anti-Zionism is not the same as antisemitism. Many Jewish people do not identify as Zionists, and many Zionists are not Jewish.

Lambeth Green Party rejects the assumption that somebody's religious, racial, or cultural identity tells us what they believe politically.
Nobody is going to have assumptions made about their politics because of the synagogue they attend, their family, their cultural life or their identity. This is about political ideas, not people's religion or ethnicity.

Many Jewish members of the Green Party have campaigned for Palestinian liberation and against Zionism, including in support of this motion. Their existence is an important reminder of why Judaism and Zionism must not be treated as interchangeable.
We recognise that some people may disagree with the Green Party's position, including some within the party, and they have every right to do so. What we hope this statement makes clear is that this policy is rooted in our commitment to equality and human rights for all. Palestinian freedom and Jewish safety are not in opposition, and Lambeth Green Party sincerely believes in both.

Sonia Winifred has proved she fights for us – decades of public service working in our libraries and as a councillor leading on equality, standing up to Labour leadership over Gaza, and a genuine local champion for our communities. Now we need to get her elected in Myatt's Fields on October 8th!
A picture of Green Candidate for Myatt's Fields, Sonia Winifred. A sticker says "Vote October 8th"Everyone should have the right to live in a decent home, breathe clean air, and ensure a safer, greener planet for the next generation to enjoy. We need to invest in our communities and create an economy where all voices are listened to. We need change and hope for the future!
But after twenty years as a member of the Labour Party, and ten years as councillor and Lambeth cabinet member for the Equalities and Culture portfolio, I saw communities like mine become invisible to the Labour Party. Our voices weren’t heard.
Lambeth residents deserve better, and they have been ignored for far too long! I joined the Green Party to change that, and since May they’ve begun to change that in Lambeth by listening and inviting the community to have a say in how services are delivered.
I am totally committed to representing the residents of Myatt’s Fields and the challenge of fixing Lambeth’s broken housing and repair systems, empowering our communities, and fighting for people every day.
Finally,

We need real change - and we need action, right now. The Greens are calling for immediate action to keep people safe, tackle the wildfires, and protect our food and water supply. But we need to change the whole system away from profit for the few and towards people and planet.
1. KEEP PEOPLE SAFE
Create a network free cool spaces and give people support to heatproof their homes

2. TACKLE WILDFIRES
Establish a wildfire prevention strategy and fund our fire services with taxes on the oil giants fuelling infernos

3. PREVENT DROUGHTS AND PROTECT OUR FOOD SUPPLY
End the failed privatisation of water and use public ownership to protect our food systemsThis isn’t inevitable. We’re not powerless to stop it. That’s why more than 230,000 of us have joined the Greens to challenge the UK’s broken systems.

We note the not guilty verdict delivered by a jury in this case in October 2024, while also acknowledging the response of the charity Inquest:

Chris was unarmed with his hands visibly on the wheel of a stationary car when he was shot in the head.

Martyn Blake was due to face a gross misconduct hearing, but a law change in June 2026 reduced the burden of proof for the defendant.

The IOPC decided first to delay its misconduct proceedings, announced in April 2025, until the result of this potential legislative change, and then to drop the hearing, despite the law having no retrospective power. We echo concerns from the Justice for Chris Kaba Campaign of this “extraordinary treatment” and from Inquest of the “dangerous erosion of police accountability.”

We note most importantly the unmissable racial dimension of this and other deaths at the hands of the Metropolitan Police.

Since 2005, four men who were unarmed at the point they faced armed police have been shot dead by the Met in non-terrorist operations:

Chris Kaba in 2022, Jermaine Baker in 2015, Mark Duggan in 2011 and Azelle Rodney in 2005.

They were all Black.

We cannot divorce this from wider discriminatory practices:
Black people are up to
48 times more likely
to be stopped and searched by the police
 in many parts of London.

Baroness Casey’s March 2023 Review, commissioned after the murder of Sarah Everard - also in our borough - found the Metropolitan Police to be institutionally racist, misogynistic and homophobic. We call upon the Met to act urgently upon these findings.

We stand in solidarity with the Black members of our community and even more firmly and steadfastly in our commitment to build a society and a borough united behind social, economic and racial justice.

Rosebank requires the public to shoulder 80% of the cost while the profits flow overseas. Meanwhile, Lambeth residents are already living through record-breaking heat. We’re calling on Helen Hayes, Steve Reed, Bell Ribeiro-Addy and Florence Eshalomi to keep their promise: no new fossil fuel licences
The full letter is below:

“Dear Helen Hayes, Steve Reed, Bell Ribeiro-Addy and Florence Eshalomi.

Reports are circulating new Labour Prime Minister Andy Burnham is ready to green light new oil and gas fields in the North Sea. We reaffirm our strong commitment to a healthy and sustainable future for the residents of Lambeth. We call on you as our members of Parliament to oppose the approval of any further fossil fuel extraction in the UK and its waters, clearly, publicly and in action, in line with your manifesto promise that no new fossil fuel licenses would be issued, and on which your voters based their choices.Everyone who lives, works and studies in Lambeth is facing unprecedented temperatures this summer with impacts on health, education, work and transport. Those who are less well off often feel the consequences most severely. Rosebank would be an unmitigated climate disaster for the people of Lambeth, the UK, and worldwide. It would produce more CO2 than the 73 lowest-emitting countries do in a year, and would destroy UK climate goals. The Met Office has reported that 2700 people have lost their lives to extreme heat already this year.

Rosebank’s vast oil profits would help fund illegal Israeli settlements in Palestine, through a parent company Delek, which has been cited by the UN to have “raised particular human rights concerns” in the West Bank.Rosebank is a bad deal for the UK. The public would shoulder over 80% of the costs – and the vast majority of risk – from developing Rosebank, which is 80% owned by Norwegian state-owned oil giant, Equinor. The oil would overwhelmingly be for export for refineries in Europe and would do nothing to strengthen the UK’s energy supplies or resilience to shocks. This could result in a net loss of hundreds of millions of pounds to the UK Treasury and would undermine our energy security.

Exaggerated claims of new job creation have been debunked. Only 27 new full time jobs would be created by Jackdaw, given it will be unstaffed for most of its operating life and most construction has already taken place. This is not the opportunity it looks to be.To permanently lower bills, have a reliable energy supply and avert climate collapse we need to move faster towards renewable energy and lower emissions. We need to wind down oil and gas ensuring a just transition for existing workers to sustainable jobs in clean energy sectors. The energy crisis, the climate crisis and increasing global tensions are caused by our reliance on expensive and finite fossil fuels.

As elected members of Parliament for Lambeth, we ask you to make clear your opposition to further fossil fuel extraction, representing all the people across this borough who share these immediate concerns.”
