The City of Lakewood has updated or replaced 365 curb ramps to be ADA-compliant since 2023. Compliant ramps use a proper slope, width, landing area, and detectable warnings (a contrasting surface that signals to people with vision impairments that they are approaching an area for motor vehicles).

Curb Extensions, also known as “bump-outs,” increase pedestrian safety by: • Enhancing visibility of pedestrians to vehicle drivers, known as “daylighting.” • Shortening crossing distance and duration. • Slowing down vehicle traffic through crossings by visually narrowing the road.

In Lakewood, several types of pedestrian crossings are used. In the graphics on this post, you can find reminders regarding proper procedures at each type including stop signs, standard traffic signals, rectangular rapid flashing beacons, and pedestrian hybrid beacons (HAWK signals).

Even with the right of way, pedestrians should make eye contact with drivers to make sure that they are safe to cross."Blue graphic with images of a traffic light and pedestrian crossing signal. Text reads "Drivers MUST yield to pedestrians crossing at red lights - especially when turning right on red.
Pedestrians must wait for “walk” signal to cross. Press button to activate the crossing if present."Blue graphic with images of a traffic light and pedestrian crossing signal. Text reads "Lights activated when pedestrian presses button
Pedestrians should wait for a gap in traffic or for vehicles to yield in both directions before crossing.
Vehicles MUST yield to pedestrians in crosswalk whether or not flashing lights are activated."Blue graphic with image of a Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon, which is two separate light fixtures on a pole. Each light fixture has two red lights and one yellow light. Text reads: "Pedestrians activate signal by pressing button.
Cross with caution when pedestrian-facing signal indicates to walk.
Vehicles MUST stop at red light; proceed on flashing red only if crosswalk is clear."
