Originally they were going to do this with the Xbox One which was part of why it got nicknamed the Xbone, Sony then proudly mocked them saying the PS4 would have discs. All tech companies do this though, like with Samsung mocking the headphone jack removal then following suit

Yes… but…. A small part of me is hopeful that even if not lots of physical media, there seems to be a resurgence of interest in “owned” media. Everyone is tired of the entertainment they love being a transient streaming thing. Offering DRM-free purchases will be the best way to avoid piracy.

Sure does its best to come across as creepy as possible but yeah online privacy is an illusion, especially now with AI etc.. still going to fight for it though! It got my location wrong thanks to VPN and fairly limited info thanks to using an iPhone. My Pixel would be more leaky, I imagine.
