It's #CloudAppreciationDay and we're celebrating with a few photos from our CIRES Photo Contest archive. CIRES scientists study clouds — from how and where they form to how they are represented in climate models. Explore our research: cires.colorado.edu/research?utm...

CIRES Fellow John Cassano and CIRES Visiting Fellow Kara Hartig are on their way to Antarctica to study the continent's weather — the fieldwork is a "do-over" from last year, when their drones didn't make it to McMurdo Station. Read the blog: ciresblogs.colorado.edu/antarcticuav...

"What happens in the Arctic does not stay in the Arctic." Twila Moon, a senior research scientist at NSIDC and CIRES, spoke with PBS News Hour about the importance of the Arctic Report Card. www.thirteen.org/programs/pbs...

Trump administration ends funding for Arctic climate report
The Trump administration said it would stop funding the Arctic Report Card, the longstanding effort to collect research on how the fastest-warming place on Earth is changing. It's the latest in a series of moves by the administration to curtail scientific research into the impacts of climate change. William Brangham discussed more with glaciologist Twila Moon, the Arctic Report Card's editor.

At the end of July, #streamflow was below average for most regional rivers. On July 29, record-low daily streamflow was recorded at 29 sites in Colorado, 10 sites in Utah, and four in Wyoming, including the Arkansas, Dolores, Eagle, Roaring Fork, South Platte, Uncompahgre, and Yampa Rivers.
Streamflow conditions in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming as of July 29, 2026.

Did you know that there is a network of volunteer observers across the US that measure precipitation every day? This effort is called the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow Network -- or "CoCoRaHS"! Become an observer today! cocorahs.org #WaterWednesday

There's still time to pour one out for the #GreatLakes today on World Water Day (March 22)💧 Lakes Superior, Huron, Michigan, Erie, and Ontario collectively hold ~20% of the planet's freshwater - 6 quadrillion gallons! That's enough to submerge the entire continental US in nearly 10 feet of water!
A graphic showing the percent of surface freshwater contained in the North American Great Lakes. Data comes from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and illustration is done by Sean Quinn.

ICESat-2 fired its TWO TRILLIONTH laser shot last weekend, and it hit off the coast of East Antarctica, right by Australia’s Casey station! Yay for @thenasaearth.bsky.social and all the incredible satellites we have monitoring planet Earth for the benefit of humanity… blogs.nasa.gov/icesat2/2025...

I worry that the focus on NOAA's weather predicting value is ignoring the millions of other ways NOAA researchers enrich communities and local economies. There are no oysters without NOAA. There are no blue crabs without NOAA. NOAA trains teachers. NOAA is the lifeblood of coastal communities.

The firings at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration are “going to affect safety of flight, safety of shipping, safety of everyday Americans,” Admiral Tim Gallaudet, who was acting NOAA chief during the first Trump term, told the AP. “Lives are at risk for sure.”

New data shows winters in Great Lakes region shrinking by two or more weeks since 1995
The study fills in more gaps about what goes on out in the lakes during the winter months. Until now, most Great Lakes research has been done on land.
