Not too shabby for a 20-year old lens.

This pretty much sums up the game tonight.

I haven’t seen the video, but a red card is what should happen for attacking a fan with a ball.

120

Michael Lake @lake.photo · 12/07/2026

Not reckless from Fox. Go watch it back: SB stops playing the ball and pushes back into Fox as she’s trying to get to the ball, taking her out mid-air. Should have been a yellow to SB.

Some truly *atrocious* refereeing tonight.

I think I'm going to work on a new score bug mockup during the Republic of Korea/Czechia game tonight. :)

Michael Lake @lake.photo · 11/06/2026

All we need now is a corporate sponsor logo in an awkwardly-too-large box… oh… wait. 🤦‍♂️

100

Michael Lake @lake.photo · 11/06/2026

Ooh, bug update! A red card and a substitution gives us some more information for the display! And with the condensed font, the typography is all over the map now. Do we really need "down to 10 players" on there? Why does the red card have a black border on it? This thing is quickly becoming a mess.

100

Michael Lake @lake.photo · 11/06/2026

Related to the colors: the white score numbers are almost lost in the mint green (where _did_ this color come from?) The white digits in the “26” logo clustered together with the scores makes the scores harder to isolate and read at a glance.

100

Michael Lake @lake.photo · 11/06/2026

What's up with the team colors?! The jerseys are dramatic, and bold, but the colors in the bug are weak and washed-out. Why is the score box for South Africa the same mint green as Mexico? Let's get some color, vibrancy, and contrast in here!

100

Michael Lake @lake.photo · 11/06/2026

I don't love the 1px white border on the flags. And there's an awkward amount of black padding on the outer edges. I don't know if there's some other bit of information that they are planning to have go into this spot, but right now, it's a bizarre void that just throws the balance off.

100

Michael Lake @lake.photo · 11/06/2026

Speaking of typography, the colon separating the minutes and seconds in the game clock should really be aligned vertically with the numbers, not aligned to the baseline. (Side note, this is something that iOS/macOS started doing automatically a few years back and it's fantastic).

100

Michael Lake @lake.photo · 11/06/2026

First up: The “FIFA World Cup 2026™” header is just egregious. Like… do we really need the trademark symbol in there? Does the ™ glyph have to be so large?! The dash before “Group A” is a hyphen, but it should really be an en dash. As-is, it's weak and doesn't really do its job well.

100

Michael Lake @lake.photo · 11/06/2026

That said… not loving this FIFA World Cup 2026™ scoreboard. Not sure if it's just on Fox One, or if this is the international broadcast… Feels like whoever put this together doesn't know typography (or just doesn't care?).

100

Michael Lake @lake.photo · 11/06/2026

I love broadcast score bugs. They're a fun intersection of graphic design, artistry, and information density. So much to communicate! - Which teams are playing? - What color are they? - What's the score? - What's the game clock? - How many subs does each team have? - What event are we even watching?

100

Michael Lake @lake.photo · 10/06/2026

Now, this is all with the benefit of a god-like omnipresent viewing angle and multiple viewings. On the field, I don’t know what it would have looked like, and the distances may have appeared much, much shorter. Gotta call ’em as you see ’em.

000

Michael Lake @lake.photo · 10/06/2026

But given the space and positioning of the players, I would have called it handling outside the box with a direct free kick for Aurora. Given the positions of players, it could have been a near-PK restart, and any attempt by SFC to delay a fast kick would be an automatic yellow.

100

Michael Lake @lake.photo · 10/06/2026

So… it has to be a DOGSO to justify the red card send-off. But this isn’t a DOGSO for me… Aurora doesn’t have possession and both the SFC keeper and defender are nearer to the ball. Generously, you could call it a denial of promising attack, which would warrant a yellow card.

The world has eroded away from this tree, and yet it hangs on, stubbornly, digging its roots into any hole in the solid rock. I’m sure this is a metaphor or something.
