dead certain I posted this when I read it but maybe maybe not

Snow Crash, Chapter 36.
Until a man is twenty-five, he still thinks, every so often, that under the right circumstances he could be the baddest motherfucker in the world. If I moved to a martial-arts monastery in China and studied real hard for ten years. If my family was wiped out by Columbian drug dealers and I swore myself to revenge. If I got a fatal disease, had one year to live, devoted it to wiping out street crime. If I just dropped out and devoted my life to being bad.
Hiro used to feel that way, too, but then he ran into Raven. In a way, this is liberating. He no longer has to worry about trying to be the baddest motherfucker in the world. That position is taken.

also look at this fuckass... THING we found while thrifting. I was thinking I should've put my denim jacket over top & used it like a waistcoat. to be clear, it does not open at the front! that is a regular trouser zipper! I did not buy it I am afraid to say, but I did find a cool 80's windbreaker:3

A white brunette, face censored with a cat doodle, wearing a pair of denim shorts, and also the bottom of some denim shorts that have been cut to be worn as (what can be best described as) a waist coat. She is in a thrift store, with lots of clothing and shoes behind her.

oh I haven't posted about my reading in a while. I'm still doing chunks of Whose Afraid of Gender (Judith Butler) maybe I'll finish it sometimes this century. it's interesting if difficult. I read Babel (R.F. Kuang). I... loved the idea of it. read it fairly easily, but it didn't flow well. it sort

I'm not sure how to recommend The Mountain In The Sea by Ray Nayler to you, but I do. It was given to me, a book I would've likely never otherwise noticed, and now maybe I can give that forward to you. that said, I've still a handful of chapters to go, so I'm going back to reading.

An extract from The Mountain In The Sea, by Ray Nayler. it reads as follows:

"I keep thinking of those people, rowing to the island to leave food."
"the kind ones. those who cared enough."
"no. they weren't kind. they were weak. they should have acted right away. they should have resisted when the authorities came to take the dogs away. violently, if that was what was needed. that would have been real kindness: to act. to save the animals from being taken away in the first place. to protect them. but they did nothing when it counted, and then tried to make up for it later with actions that were not enough. it was useless, and cruel. it just created more suffering. their inaction, when it really doubted, was also a kind of action. it was a choice they made."
"they were afraid. the state was powerful, and they were nobody at all."
"well, I am nobody at all. but I am not afraid. not anymore."

An extract from Jade War, second book of the Green Bone saga, by Fonda Lee.
Anden had been waiting to hear those words come out of his cousin's mouth for years. Now however, he felt no great relief or happiness—only the sort of heaviness that comes from wanting something for so long that the final achievement of it is a loss—because the waiting is over and the waiting has become too much a part of oneself to let go of easily.

the funeral was non religious but they did read this passage, and it's been rattling around my head since. don't really know why honestly. I don't believe in purpose so much. but in the same breath I can believe each thing has its time. not in purpose as much as... I'm not sure.

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-8
