🏋️ Training for journalists on gender sensitivity and ethical reporting is essential. Acknowledging the complexities of feminicide and violence against women is part of that.

🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Community engagement is key! Partnering with activists and families can help bring cases to light, especially when mainstream media ignores them. Social media can be a powerful tool for change but also presents challenge.

🌈 Intersectional approaches are vital. Violence against LGBTQ+ individuals and Indigenous women requires specific attention, as these groups experience violence rooted in prejudice and often face social complicity.

❣️ The media often fails to humanise victims, especially women of colour, by omitting photos or personal details. There is a bias toward reporting on white female victims more extensively than Black women, Indigenous women or trans women, who are disproportionately affected.

ladelentes.bsky.social @ladelentes.bsky.social · 19/12/2024
🚫 Challenges in media coverage include: victim-blaming narratives, focusing on victim's past behaviour instead of the crime, and sensationalism. Also, a lack of follow-up on cases is a common issue.

📅 Mark your calendars! 26 Nov 2024 🕙 10 AM ET Panel discussion: What is the role of the news media in the struggle against feminicide? We will explore the challenges and responsibilities of the media in reporting on human rights abuses. Join us! 🔗 Register here: bit.ly/DCFNOV2024
Purple hands holding white newspapers on a green and purple background. Text inviting you to the event reads: What is the role of news media in the struggle against feminicide? Media coverage of feminicide is essential to make gender-based violence visible and challenge it. Based on the prior research and community building of Data Against Feminicide, we know that a large number of activists produce data from press monitoring. But beyond data, the media is a crucial way to disseminate information, raise awareness and influence norms and public culture.
However, it is all too common to find partial, biased or discriminatory narratives in media coverage of violence against women, particularly those most stigmatized by their gender identity, race-ethnicity, social class or migratory status. In most media coverage, individual cases of violence are not named or framed as part of a broader systemic social problem. The discriminatory and biased media coverage of feminicide has been widely documented across transnational contexts, including Latin America, the United States and Europe. Rita Segato has called this phenomenon a “pedagogy of cruelty” that perpetuates violence against women.
We must challenge this pedagogy of cruelty and, in this sense, in recent years good practice guides for the coverage of femicide/feminicide have been published in different countries and internationally.
In this conversation, we will explore the narratives, challenges and responsibilities of the media in reporting on human rights abuses, with panelists who have approached the media coverage of feminicide from activism, journalism and academia. We will learn more about what the recommended best practices are, and we will think about what strategies we can develop to facilitate their adoption.
This gathering is especially relevant for journalists or communication professionals interested in gender-related violence and feminicide, and for the community of activists and organizations who produce feminicide data by monitoring the media for their projects.
