well it was a very fine birthday dinner with friends. very different than last year. and one of my presents was getting paperback reading copies of my favorite books The Complete Rynosseros so now I can do annotations in the book and not worry about damaging my expensive copies.

The Library I feel is his greatest story in the cycle. It is part of a group of longer stories which are joined with each of the 4 books of stories. Though one is missing which he could never finish to his satisfaction so it remains unpublished.

In relation to this, yes I do own original rare printings of the four book cycle, the high quality hardcover signed edition and now thanks to a birthday present, reading copies that I do not have to worry about. Also the I think rare anth collecting The Library novella story
the aforementioned books placed on a table. the X6 anthology cover featuring a very large black X and a small white 6

It still fascinates me that when Nick Cave sings The Weeping Song, he does each side of the father/son conversation in different tonal voices.

Terry does something both Cordwainer Smith in his Instrumentality of Mankind stories and Vance does in Dying Earth, structure short stories in such a way that they read together as a complete long length novel. He was influenced by both writers. Anyway to answer you in short, yes very much read them

Todd Sanders @lackriver.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
I used to post on the other place about them and Terry eventually emailed me to thank me for talking about the work. Was a true honor to hear from him. The collected stories within the four books are my absolute favorite. If you like Cordwainer Smith and how he tells tales, these will appeal.

The stories take many different identities, some are mythic, some are intimate, some are high adventure. They reward the attentive reader and rereader. I always find something new, even after a decade of reading them each year.

Todd Sanders @lackriver.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
I reread these stories every year because of the humanity and beauty of the main character Tom Tyson who is bold and honorable and clever and kind. Terry writes gorgeous prose and there is an amazing complexity to the stories. Over time you notice small seeds he plants and flower many stories later

the months pass and it will soon be time again to reread The Complete Rynosseros by Terry Dowling and to again dream of convincing at least one person I know to read all the stories as well so I will finally have someone to talk to about them. A dream dreamt for decades at this point.

Did you know The Librarian has an arch nemesis (in reality actually an X-Men villain) named The Vanisher? I usually post this comic book panel when talking about him but it is part of a full page comic spread and could be mini Librarian story in of itself.
The Vanisher in an orange scaled jumpsuit and outlandish pink cowl holds a stack of books and proclaims "I am the Vanisher and I take what books I want". A jeans jacket dude looks on in askanceFull 5 panels showing the Vanisher interacting with an African American woman librarian who wants his library card. Another guy in a jeans jacket with patches and a slouchy hat is complaining the Vanisher is taking all the book. Vanisher says his catch phrase "I am the Vanisher and I take what books I want". She says - "Not without a library card!" and in the final panel he disappears with the books in a cloud of poof and she says "Oh, no! First the Bookworm, now this!"

Have to say, rereading Ana’s Librarian story, that is one of the finest stories I have ever had the privilege to publish. That story brings to life the character I envisioned those years ago so perfectly. Ana’s deft touch is a marvel.

So many I follow on YT are reconsidering what they are doing. They seem exhausted and tired of slaving to the algorithm. Tired of having only a public life and nothing left for themselves. Seems like YT has finally gone too far and a real movement is growing.
