A construction worker fell on a job. 18 years later, he died by suicide from fighting the systems ostensibly set up to provide support. In this powerful video, his daughter reflects on the videos he left as evidence of his pain and fight! Pls take care while watching! youtu.be/Kimur4jkJT8?...

I studied mass layoffs for my PhD. Different context, but players are workers, and their displacement is destabilizing, incl for the guys left behind. It’s a staggering ask to return to work w/in hours of losing colleagues and friends. Wishing them well. #BlueJays h/t @mitchbannon.bsky.social

Excited to travel to Lithuania from Canada next month for the Euro Symposium on Suicide and Suicidal Behaviour (ESSSB21), as part of @wellcomework.bsky.social project. I will be speaking about how scripts of exceptionalism, re: work’s reln to suicide, foreclose recognition of systemic violence

I am a lover of how writers weave words. Trina's wordsmithery in this article led me to pick up Black Bear. She holds grief and structural critique together, placing her brother's death by suicide justly within the political context that suicides are often culturally stripped of. #canlab #cdnpoli

Suicide risk varies by occupation. A new Revelios study reports 43% of music industry workers have experienced suicidal thoughts, a rate shaped by conditions of precarious labour including gig-based contracts, chronic financial instability, and near-absent institutional support #canlab #suicidology
Infographic titled "Mental Health in the Canadian Music Industry: SOUNDCHECK Final Report 2026" by Revelios. Key findings from a national mixed-methods study of 1,250+ professionals: 94% report mental health issues are widespread; 53% felt life wasn't worth living; 43% have considered suicide; 86% experience anxiety; only 10% agree that leaders actively support mental health in the workplace.

In late '25, I joined the incredible team @wellcometrust.bsky.social as a postdoc fellow. Several months in, I'm still pinching myself! This account will be a space where I share work-adjacent musings & articles. As the content will cover suicide in occupational contexts, please follow with care.

Hello people crafting policy responses to Trump's March Madness. Even if he walks back the tariffs, we need EI reform. In June the share of the unemployed receiving regular jobless benefits was 34%, the LOWEST RATE IN HISTORY. www.thestar.com/business/opi... Same in December, pre-Trump. Let's go!

Armine Yalnizyan: Out of work? You may be out of luck. Why getting EI is harder than it’s ever been
Cuts to EI in the nineties, writes Armine Yalnizyan, left a gutted program. Now, as unemployment rises, Canadian youth and newcomers are being hit hardest.
