The labor movement can’t grow by acting as a business. We have potential power in our numbers, our skills, and our strategic positions in the economy. But this power becomes real only when members are willing to act on their own behalf. Adapted from Democracy is Power. labornotes.org/store
mock air drop reading: if members aren't involved in shaping the union's strategy, it doesn't matter how brilliant that strategy is.

Our archetypal villainesses—Amy Dunne of Gone Girl, sisters Sally and Gillian Owens of Practical Magic, and Merricat Blackwood of We Have Always Lived in the Castle—have some positively devilish organizing tactics (not all of which we endorse!) up their trumpet sleeves 1/2

Russell Sires and John Gasceyare, Teamsters Local 509 stewards in South Carolina, described how they organized over understaffing when management began filling gaps by having lower-paid union members handle some deliveries in violation of their contract labornotes.org/2026/08/stew...
Screenshot of two graphs from the article, which read: Any time we found out that air drivers had touched ground packages, we made sure they got paid the top rate for regular drivers, as the contract requires. This can be a difference of $15 an hour or more, so the company was really robbing these workers by paying them the lower rate.

When an air driver filed his own grievance for the first time, we knew we had reached a tipping point. Members started to see what was happening—the long-term erosion of good union jobs. As others saw the checks he was getting, they started to follow suit.
