Clemente Nicasio Idar was an organizer for the AFL (now @aflcio.org). As one of the first Mexican American organizers in the mainstream labor movement, Idar worked to organize Mexican and Mexican American workers and improve wages and working conditions across the U.S. Southwest.

María Portalatín helped turn school paraprofessionals from low-wage workers with little power on the job into a powerful voice in organized labor. As a key leader at the @uft.org, @nysut.bsky.social and @aft.org, she fought for better pay, benefits, and the respect paraprofessionals deserved.

After working as an organizer for @unitehere.org, Miguel Contreras went on to lead LA County Federation of Labor. In 2000, he helped rally crucial support for the historic janitors' strike which secured a landmark contract that became a national blueprint for organizing low-wage, immigrant workers.

In 1916, Luisa Capetillo helped organize & lead a massive Sugar Cane Strike in Puerto Rico, successfully mobilizing over 40,000 workers to secure an average 13% wage increase. Her activism took her across Puerto Rico and to New York City where she continued to educate & organize workers

Baldemar Velásquez founded FLOC in 1967. Under his leadership, FLOC made labor history by becoming the first union to negotiate multi-party collective bargaining agreements and the first to represent H-2A guestworkers under a labor agreement.

Dolores Huerta co-founded @ufw.bsky.social. She led a national grape boycott to drive changes across California’s table grape industry. She negotiated the first collective bargaining agreement between agricultural business & farm workers winning better wages & working conditions.

In 2022, Towson workers made history as the 1st unionized Apple store in the country. Now, Apple is closing the store & isn't providing equal benefits to union workers. Together with over 50 House Democrats, we’re calling on the NLRB to investigate this act of union-busting.

Alice Ip, Connie Ling, and May Chen were International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union (now @unitehere.org) organizers who helped lead the 1982 Chinatown garment workers’ strike. The strike was one of the largest mobilizations of Asian American workers in U.S. labor history.

After participating in the 1934 San Francisco Dock Strike picket lines, Harry Kamoku returned to Hilo. There, in 1935, he organized dockworkers by founding the Hilo Longshoremen’s Association, Hawai'i's first multi-ethnic union, which later became part of the @ilwu.bsky.social

Pam Tau Lee spent a decade organizing with @unitehere.org Local 2. She organized hotel room cleaners & Chinatown restaurant workers through community-based participatory research, using workers’ own experiences to expose unsafe working conditions.

Elmo Samson led LIUNA Local 368 for nearly 2 decades, growing it from a few hundred members into one of the state’s most influential building trades unions. In 1960, he helped negotiate Hawai‘i’s 1st statewide master construction agreement alongside the Carpenters & IBEW.

In 1934, Karl Yoneda helped organize San Francisco longshore workers and played an important role in persuading Japanese sailors and workers to hold the line during the strike. He later became one of the first Asian American members of the @ilwu.bsky.social.

The Trump Administration is making it easier for big corporations to misclassify workers as independent contractors, denying them the protections and benefits they have earned. We should be raising standards to better protect workers - not encouraging companies to exploit them.
