Gore Foster, born Gregory, hadn't left his house in weeks.

The outside world was hostile, an ever-looming threat and he wanted no part of it. He hadn't considered himself a true member of society in years; he was avoidant of the stares and the whispers and the comments about his stench. The smell that wafted off of him gave away all the rot that had taken root in him, the mold that grew into his veins from the humidity of his night-terror riddled sweat, and the spores that sprouted from his head from lack of wash. He knew they thought less of him, the people on the outside, so he avoided them, never stepping foot past the threshold of his front-door in hopes that they would forget about his existence.

And it was easy to stay inside, delivery was just a click away.

It was easy to find a friend, the internet was vast.

It was easy to stay in control, the apartment was his own.

His sanctuary. His protection against the judgment. Inside, no one asked him why he never bathed or why his hair was matted and tangled. No one ever pointed out the stains on his pants, or the holes in his shirt, or the way he picked at his nails until they were too short to effectively pick at his scabs.

No one questioned anything and he was safe from the shame.

He was safe from the world, the expectations, the pressure, and the crippling loneliness that came from being seen but not heard.

His apartment reflected him like a mirror image. Dust collected on the shelves, dishes piled in the sink, counters smudged with sticky spilled liquids. It was hazard just like his mind, bottles scattered across the floor but not the same bottles his dad preferred.

Gore didn't want to pick up the pieces. He wanted to settle into the rot and let it take him, to let the spoiled food hold him against their fuzzy beds all colored white and green and black.

He would've been happy with that, he thinks.

Disappearing into a wasteland of his own making, but the rot never fully takes him.
