For sure. I’m always game for big swings, and I respect this one. My comment is more directed at the self righteous crowd implying that anyone who didn’t love it didn’t get it.

Here’s the thing about DIGGER: You can pick up what it’s putting down and still not like the execution

With that said… impressive production design

The Netflix WONKA game show is bizarre and dystopian. BEAST GAMES with Wonka theming. So many disillusioned or infuriated contestants get eliminated — losing their shot at winning three million very real dollars — and refuse to play along with their whimsical staged demises

Boo box, door, fabric pull away, blind corner, puppet My bigger issue is I shouldn’t be able to clock where all the scares will come from as I enter the room. It was bizarrely telegraphed in many spots (though Dead Deader Deadest fared best overall in this respect I think)

It felt like a budget year, but it was admittedly an impressive use of existing resources (with Stranger Things and Sinners getting the bulk of the new investments). After attending Orlando's event a few nights a week before... Hollywood has to mix up its scare tactics more.

Yeah this absolutely means they’re using generative AI. What a farce.

You would like The Secret Millionaire on Netflix, which feels like a ripoff because it basically is, but with significantly sounder game mechanics and incentives like what you’re describing

STOLEN KINGDOM - the documentary about urban exploration and backstage pillaging in Disney theme parks - is really terrific. Remarkably distills many years of hyper-niche drama and mystery into an airtight 74 minutes, revealing the psyches of a variety of notorious personalities along the way.

I irritated my ulnar nerve by sleeping funny on a plane. The nerve needs rest so that it can heal, but that means I can't use my dominant hand for most everyday tasks. Typing this post took 3x longer than it should've. With all the work I need to get done, not ideal!

My wife’s first comment coming out of the theater was “I wonder how he really feels about children.”

There were definitely some, uh… less than great outfits given the family environment. Despite expanding from last year, the event is clearly struggling operationally, too.

There is a noticeably strange lack of Fast & Furious in the new Fast & Furious ride!

Visited Six Flags Magic Mountain for the first time in a year-ish yesterday. Operations have meaningfully improved. Every open coaster was running two trains, with reasonably swift dispatch times. Short queues. Twisted Colossus and Scream were closed without notice, but that's Six Flags for you!

Yeah, that and the baby as the 30th pledge are winners. Otherwise... more misses than hits, I think

Programmed a double feature of ANIMAL HOUSE and THE HOUSE BUNNY last night. The latter is... so *weird.* Anna Faris is game as always, but it's a PG-13 movie about an orphaned Playboy bunny sexifying a loser sorority. The rating is a dead-weight anchor, neutering the comedy and mandating innuendo.

BUFFET INFINITY has the sauce. I’ve seen chatter around here singing its praises, but frankly I think folks are underselling the unique blend of absurd humor and cosmic horror. Drops on Shudder soon, but it’s worth the money to rent, too. Go in as blind as possible.

The rollout is a total mess, but I guess the latest is that after 2PM guests *can* access during normal park hours (before they inevitably cut off the line, I guess). Express guests who bought before the change may (?) have one-time access honored. RIP guests likely get to ride once before dinner.

I think the most effective slashers do this. FRIDAY THE 13TH copies that intent/formula pretty well, with the carnage only becoming widely apparent in that final third, if memory serves. Once the transition occurs, you're basically stuck with cat-and-mouse, survival mode, and chases.

Kyle Tague @kyletague.bsky.social · 12/08/2026
There’s two parts to most slashers: Before and after a critical mass of principal characters realize that killings are happening and a slasher is at large.

I have no reason to be there (so it's easy to make this decision), but after that first deadly collision, I concluded I wouldn't fly into Washington, D.C. until the current administration leaves office.

I suppose we’re talking about this and not the Depp of it all… but I’m not sure it’ll work out if the distraction calls attention to the apparent redundancy of the film’s premise

Never mind that A CHRISTMAS CAROL very much depicts the exploits of Ebenezer’s younger years! It’s the whole Ghost of Christmas Past thing! What are we doing here.

What in the world is this tagline? I’m pretty sure Ebenezer was *always* Scrooge. There’s no before/after. It’s his literal last name!
The baffling film poster for Ti West’s Ebenezer, whose confounding tagline reads “Before He was Scrooge He Was…”

There've been a handful of houses whose corresponding films didn't release in theaters until the event was half over! Crimson Peak basically spoiled the entire plot

That evolution was probably necessary, but it's been interesting to see the museum move away from the more critical and academic dissection of film/Hollywood history and shift toward a softer, safer "aren't the movies grand?!" bent. More interested in mythmaking than ugly truths.

The new(ish?) PONYO exhibit was also a letdown. More of a playground for children than anything befitting a legitimate museum. I hadn't realized they've rotated out many of the core exhibitions that opened with the facility and had been in place for years.

Really dug the JAWS exhibition at the Academy Museum. Thorough, packed with neat artifacts, and frequently clever in its efforts to engage visitors. Learned quite a few things! The new Marilyn Monroe exhibit, sadly, was a disappointment. Shockingly surface level and mostly a collection of costumes.

We finished the assembly cut for my new movie, PREVIOUS TENANT, after some pickups on Sunday. Deeply proud of our cast and crew. Took me quite a bit longer than I would've liked, but one's wedding, a three-week honeymoon, and a new job tend to introduce delays.

Flat rides, some junior coasters, some entertainment. The latter looks solid for the target audience. But that slate could really work with typical Universal-quality theming. They just didn’t execute at that level here. There’s barely any theming at all.

I just don’t think you can in good faith use the word “immersive” to describe any of the new Universal Kids Park’s lands. They are empirically not. I get Universal marketing is going to abuse the word like everyone else, but I’m also seeing “creators” say it without irony, and it’s… revealing.
